Hey everybody, quick question can I hoist up my motor by the 4 bolts on the top of the intake to put it back in the Jeep? When I took it out the heads where already off it so it was much lighter. Thanks for any recommendations!

If you use one of those plates that bolt on where the carb goes you should be able too. Disclaimer, I haven't done this with a 304 but have with lots of Gm V8's, even with aluminum intakes and can't think of anything that would be significantly different. Use decent bolts and make sure you get enough threads in the hole.

Aren't there blind threaded holes in the manifold for lifting? IIRC...

You can always loosen a head bolt at opposite corners and stretch a chain across. That's a common way to do it.

AMC V8s are a little lighter than the iron SBCs. So no problem using a lifitng plate, I'd think. Not sure it's ok for an aluminum manifold though.

Will that hurt the head gasket loosening it and then torquing it again?

Nah. Not that I know of. Just go around the pattern again with your torque wrench.

I used longer bolts in opposite corners where the intake attaches to the heads when I lifted mine out. Didn't have any problems. I haven't put it back in yet, but I figure I'll do the same thing.

Yes, under the manifold bolts would be better. That must be how I did it...

I wouldn't hesitate using the carb mounting flange on an iron manifold, but I chicken out with aluminum aftermarket intakes. I know its commonly done, but I don't. Its just about as easy to add a lift eye on the front and opposite rear corner for this purpose.

We all know a single forgotten ground strap can support the weight of an entire drivetrain...
