I'm ready to buy a set of 5 tires for my 55 cj5. Currently it has a set of dry rotted 6.50x16's on it. I want to step it up to a 7.00x16 but I seem to be having issues finding a off road style in that size. 7.50x16 will be too big and the 6.50x16 just look too small. What I really want to buy are these...

    http://ok4wd.com/gateway-buckshot-mudder

But unfortunately they don't make the smaller size in a 16' wheel. I have found a set of good stock 15' wheels but don't really want to spend the extra cash. ($275)

    I also found these...

    http://m.ebay.com/itm/131357328167?nav=SEARCH

But imho the specs make them too heavy duty and they are HEAVY. I still have 9' brakes and do not wish to upgrade them.

I want to stay with the classic look so I would rather stay with bias ply.

So I ask the forum for thoughts and ideas. What do you guys think?

I can understand staying with a bias tire. And the 16" wheel.

But both of the ones you linked are extremely aggressive patterns, especially for an f-head. Have you looked for a slightly more conventional tread?

A street type bias ply doesn't have the look that I am going for and there will be times that it will be driven off road. Nothing that needs the super aggressiveness of the tires I listed above. However that is all that I could find in an off road tire in that size.

Ndcc's are also available but I don't want to take that route if there are alternatives that I don't know about.

I understand the look you're going for, but in my experience a jeep drives a lot better with radials.

Walck's sells a very nice old style tire, which I think I'm going to get for my 56 CJ-5. Check out their web site. www.Walcks4wd.com Also, summit racing carries a lot too.

Either of the tires listed are going to provide an uncomfortable street ride at best. At worst, you'll begin to hate driving the rig.

There's a really good reason why many of us don't run tires like that... BTDT, don't like it! ;)

There's a really aggressive but narrow tire sold in the European/Asian/Australian market, with limited availability in the US, Simex. I think it would provide the look you want, but IIRC it is still bias ply.
    Here's an old discussion thread:
    http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f15/simex-tires-they-caviar-mud-tires-501828/

    example: Extreme trekker:

That discussion thread also mentions Cooper ST... take a look at Cooper, the STT in size LT235/85R16 would probably work for your narrow 16" wheel, yet is just under 32" tall. The STT is very aggressive, yet provides the benefits of radial construction.

Have you looked at Hankook Dynopro MT or the Cooper STT series?

I'm really not concerned about the street ride. It will only see 10 miles of road use a trip. Just from my house to the farm. From there it will be on the farm roads and out in the fields, woods, and hills. Wherever I need to take it.

Basically what started this whole project is that the county sheriff wants me in something street legal. No ticket yet but I'm not going to get another warning.

Howard those would be perfect but they don't seem to come in a 7.00x16.

I've looked at the radials you guys have listed and none have the classic jeep look that I'm going for. Mine is too original and I prefer to keep it that way. Out here everyone and their brother has a jeep. I want to keep mine stock to remain different.

I'd be all over getting those Traker tires listed on ebay. Those are like the Goodyear Custom Hi Miler tires. More original looking would be NDT's however. Those might be your best choice, and I think they would work well for your described usage. Just remember they aren't very good on wet roads.

Did you notice they are 12 ply rating? Ouch.

That and they weigh 48.5 lbs each. Compared to NDT'S which weigh around 30 lbs each. I'm concerned that the extra rotational mass will be too much for the stock 9inch brakes. I doubt I will be going much faster than 45 mph but I don't want to over tax them.

Point taken, but will the extra 1/2" make that big a difference?

Yeah, they are 12 ply rated and are heavy too, undoubtedly. Garage gnome has similar tires, we need his input too. Most of the 7.50 x 16 tires I've seen were 8 ply rated, so the 12 ply does surprise me. For the described use I do think NDT's would fit the bill.

I have the "figure A" style Super Traxions in 7.00-15. They're great.

My understanding is that a 7.00 is 31 inches tall and a 7.50 is 33 inches tall. Currently I have worn 6.50 which measure just over 28 inches.

So from the hub out we are only talking a 1 inch difference from a 7.00 to a 7.50 which I agree isn't much but remember I'm going from a 6.50... so overall we would be talking a 5 inch larger tire. I could probably make it fit but I would rather only go up one size not two.

It's a little bit of stubbornness and a little bit of not wanting a tall jeep.

Glenn, I've looked at those before and couldn't see the size that I was looking for (In a 16 inch wheel). Otherwise they would fit the bill as well.

One thing that also needs to be considered is the true rim width you have now. You probably have 4.5" rims and 7.50 really is a bit too much for that rim. I wouldn't put too much faith in those listed diameters however, most of the 7.50 tires I've seen measure around 31 inches. I'd certainly be surprised if a 7.00 is more than 30 inches tall.
