    Hey guys,

This 70 degree weather got me wanting to drive the Jeep. So I did. I was driving for about 15 min, came to a coast in neutral at a red light.....and she dies. I get out (after directing traffic) and noticed fuel dripping from the top of the carb. Let it sit for about five and she sputtered and started up. I went home and changed out the Solex and put the newly rebuilt Carter YF on, thinking the problem was fixed, drove it about 15 min and it happened again.chainsawguy I'm stumped. I have a '63 CJ5 with the F134 with a new electronic ignition, alternator, new plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel lines. I thought maybe the idle was set too low, but I don't know. Any thoughts?

New fuel pump? What type, electric or mechanical? F134 Carter carb needs very little fuel pressure, approx 3 psi.

Did you get the correct venting gas cap that is functioning properly? if not your tank could get a vacuum inside it and not allow your pump to pump the fuel. That's probably not it since you say you had fuel dripping at the carb. Float stuck? probably not since new carb didn't fix it. Have you checked to see if it is a fuel problem and not electrical or something else? Maybe vapor lock? where on the carb was the fuel leaking? Maybe jets inside the carb got gummy varnish from old fuel sitting in carb all winter without Sta-bil or being drained?

The fuel pump is the stock mechanical type. The Solex is brand new and the carter was just rebuilt. The carb was pouring gas out of the top. The fuel cap is a crown automotive cap. I just think that its weird that with two different carbs on it has the same problem....

Isn't there supposed to be a return line going from the fuel filter to the gas tank, with the stock fuel filter, that reduces the pressure?

If gas is pouring out the carb, then the needle & seat isn't doing its job. The fact that you have the same problem with two different carbs would lead me to suspect too much fuel pressure. Either that, or you're getting debris into the carb, and it caused both of them to stick open.

This seems likely. Look in the float bowls for sediment.

Since both carbs have the same problem I'd look for either to much fuel pressure, even though it's a new pump, or dirt in the carbs. I don't see fuel filter in your list above? Do you have the old fuel pump to put back on and try?

I had the same problem with a stock Rochester and stock fuel pump. I had plugged the fuel return coming out of the stock fuel pump because I had read that it was not needed. Put the return line back on and fixed the problem.

Do you have a spacer between the fuel pump and block? You need this to reduce the fuel pressure. The solex requires much less fuel pressure than the carter. This sounds like the problem to me.

Thanks guys.....I'm going to try to reduce the fuel pressure maybe by using an inline regulator. Good tip about the return line, I'll check that too.....Seems like I remember my tank having two holes, I just thought the other was a drain hole. Let me get back at it and see what I can find.......

I thought I read that the spacer does nothing for pressure, and it only affects the volume? and makes the pump last longer since it makes for shorter strokes.

My book doesn't show in its diagrams a fuel return line, im pretty sure the early ones with a carter carb and under seat tank don't require one on an F-head. I now for sure my 59 cj5 with F-head 1bbl carb and 4693 dual action AC pump, with the stock under seat tank doesn't have a return line and there is no extra ports for it to have one. And mine runs perfect, and idles the same.

:v6: Jeeps have a return line, but IIRC the 4 cyl does not.

No return line on f-Head. The spring in the pump holds the diaphragm up to specified pressure, and only lets the pump lever take enough stroke to maintain it.

Ok, I've got an update. I checked the filler screen on the fuel pump and noticed some trash. I cleaned what I could out, installed a small inline fuel filter, blew out the line, and she started up. I still have the original problem though. When it idles down, it dies. If I keep the RPMs up, it runs good but if I let it idle down it runs like crap and eventually goes dead. What would cause this engine to run fine at high RPMs but die at idle? Bad cam? Still stumped.......

Running rich would do that. Could be the float valve leaking excess fuel, as everyone is suggesting.

    Yep.
If you had junk in the line, it's bound to be in the carb, too.
Take the top of the carb off & clean it out-I'll bet you'll find some dirt in the needle & seat.
At higher RPM, the engine is using more fuel, so the needle & seat stays open anyway, and
you're fine. At low speed/idle, you're dumping excess fuel into the engine & it dies.

It is the rebuilt YF. An easy and simple fix.... It'll cost you around 55 dollars to fix.

Put in the correct needle valve and seat and it'll run like a new one.

This topic pops up about every six months or so. Rebuild shops cannot rebuild a jeep YF 'cause they don't have the right parts.

Go to the CJ3B page and there is a current discussion about the same problem that you are facing.

As far as the Solex is concerned, why they were never designed to work on the F-134. The only reason that the Solex comes into play at all is that they will physically fit on an F-134 and since YF's are no longer manufactured, jeep vendors would have nothing to sell if it wasn't for Solex. The logic here is "if the carburetor fits, then it probably will work.........."

Two filters. One before the pump, and one before the carb.

And just because it is new doesn't mean it is any good.

That being said, check the float levels on both carbs. Bet they aren't where they should be.
