The shift tower on my T14 is leaking. With no shift boot on, gear lube gets sprayed all over inside the cab by the wind. With a shift boot, it soaks the whole transmission in oil. What can be done to prevent this? As far as I know there isn't supposed to be any kind of seal on it. The transfercase vent is not plugged, so it shouldn't be building pressure. Thoughts?

There is no seal in the top of a T14 shift housing, only the pivot ball on the base of the cane and a corresponding half-round indent in the top casting. Maybe there is excessive wear, or the spring is broken and is not keeping the pivot ball tight to the housing. Otherwise, double-check the vent is open and clear.

Yes, there should only be splash above the oil pool in the transmission. I would look for some reason that the transmission is building pressure.

Hmm. I guess I can try swapping out the shifter with one of my parts transmissions. I did not take the shifter assembly apart when I rebuilt the transmission, so it is possible that the ball has excessive wear. I looked at the vent again and it is still free, so I don't think pressure is building.

Did you disassemble the vent to clean it? There is an inner collar with a small hole that can clog with gunk. I've had more than one that needed disassembly.

I took the "lid" off, soaked it in solvent for a while, then blew air through it to make sure it was clear.

This may be a silly question, but are you sure the transmission isn't simply overfilled?

The T-14 breathes through the transfer case as already noted. If someone installed a sealed bearing between the transmission and transfer case you could get the same results as a clogged breather.

No sealed bearing. I rebuilt both myself. Is the D18 fill hole higher than the T14 fill hole? I have always filled through the transfercase.

With the T-90 the t-case fill hole is lower, wouldn't it be lower will all of the tranmissions? How about maybe the t-case vent is plugged?

Edit: I see you say the t-case vent isn't plugged. Have you checked the tranmission level?
