I have a L-head that starts, but if it stalls out, I can't start it again ( have to wait a few hours before I try again, and it starts right up). The engine is a fresh rebuild, and I have an electric fuel pump on it. I haven't been able to get the timing set up very well. I have a light, but can't read the marks on the flywheel. Carb isn't tuned yet ether just the A/F adjustment is about right.

    A little help?

    MAN I FEEL LIKE A DUMB ***!

Ok so the guy who rebuilt the engine came by about an hour ago, and did a little work. First of all I had cylinder #3 and #2 reversed on the distributor. Second of all, I had the timing 180 off. I didn't know that their are 2 adjustment screws on the distributor.

The engine runs and sounds (sounded like a B&S engine before) I may have a float problem on the carb but first I need to set the timing.

I need some help with this. Does any of you have a picture of a distributor, with relation to the location of the adjustment bolts. Even with my timing light I can't get it set right, better if I had something to go by. I found the timing marks, but wasn't able to lock it down right and now can't find the marks again.

    thanks in advance

That's EXACTLY what happened to my engine!! My timing is still 180 out... So I just time off the number 3 plug wire.

I've got a couple I can lay hands on right now. Not sure if they are the right resolution or not. See if they will help...

I forgot to include that the distributor is stolen of a 1963 f-head engine...

So I consulted my Willys Mechanics Manual (worth the $60 BTW) and have figured out exacTly to a T what I need to do. I bolted the distributor in the wrong way...yeah I know..how. Ummm I need to turn it 180 clockwise when bolt it back down.

thanks for the pics beck, might come in handy later.

    You're welcome.

Since the tax money is in I'll be buying a NEW distributor (electronic) so I thought that they would come in handy for me as well.

    good luck.

BTW: for about $150 you can have a NEW electronic distributor and not have to deal with the points....

I have a conversion kit in a box. I want to get it tuned with points, then do teh conversion...makes it a little more fun and challenging.

I am a friend of Carls...I have also bought a lot from him already. Great guy and he has a nice business going for him.

I got it timed right..I think...it sure does sound right. But I need to tune the Carter W-O carburetor. It won't idle bellow 1000 RPM. How do I adjust the idle...my manual isn't very specific.

ok, so I have been driving it around the yard, and a little bit down the road (NO PAINT, NO SEAT, NO LIGHTS, NO PLATES, NO WINDOWS, NO DOORS, FENDERS, GOOD, OR GRILL!) When I go into second gear in high range, the engine wants to stall, I need to pump the gas to keep it going. My speedo is saying about 35 MPH and all of a sudden I feel like I am loosing power???

Do I adjust the timing, carb, or both? I got no idea what im doing with the W-O carb so walk me through it.

$90 or so bucks and get a Pertronix to put in the old distributer
Mine runs ever so much smoother now than it did with the points and condensor.

I have one in the box, but I want to get it running well with the points first. Then when I do the swap it will run even smoother.

I was noticing something today when I drove it outside to clean the shop today. The crank pulley looks like it is bent? it looks like a wobbly tire! I guess that isn't normal. Or could it be a optical illusion? The crank looks like its on straight when the engine is stopped.

Others may know more than me but I don't think the pulley being bent will make a difference as far as how it's running. It WILL make a difference on how long your belts last. However I think that I would check it to ensure it's not a loose pulley or something important bent (crankshaft? or harmonic balancer bad???).

I will sue the guy who rebuilt the engine if the crank is bad! I think the pulley might not be on all the way. I'll check it out tomorrow.
