Well I finnally aquired some tires. I bought some 38x15.50 radial SSRs off a kid in atascadero. I guess he works at the tire store up there and said they were off some expedition that had never seen dirt, ever. I believe him as the tread is worn almost all the way down, but they still have all the little nubins on the sidewalls.

I wanted 39.5s, but these worn out 38s will at least work to get this thing rolling and I can see how things will fit etc..., plus they were cheap!

So I mounted a couple of them up today and once I figured out a good procedure it went pretty good. Theres nothing like wrestling a 100lbs doughnut though! Whats nice is not having to seat any beads, just tighten the bolts down and air it up.

I mocked things up and it looks ok. Its a bit wide as you can see. It may be a bit narrower once I get the front end installed again and keep in mind the chassis will be a couple inches taller than this.

I also got the radiator mounts tacked in.

Drivers side was complicated because the steering box is in the way. No problem though it all clears just fine.

So now I've got to concentrate my efforts on getting the front axle together. My folks are coming down in a month and it'd be cool to at least be able to roll it out for them to see.

    Enjoy!

Ps. Link mounts are from Polyperformance. There in San Luis Obispo not even a mile from where I work and I've known Dave the owner for years so thats where I buy most of my fab parts.

My coworkers suck. Sorry for the interruption, I had to delete what they wrote here. I'm loving all the Fab work. Keep it up! That thing is going to be unstoppable!

    Ummmm......, ok.

Its almost midnight and all through the house the cat, dog and roomates were sleeping.....

While Ghetto Fab. was grinding away in the garage.

Front axle is back under the jeep. The gears and diff cover are installed. Now its time to work on steering.

Its good to have a job and I've been taking advantage of it on the weekends to do some machining.

Finished with the machining. Arms are of the springless shim design.

Now your getting it! Double shear heim mounts. Don't worry they'll be fully plated in etc...., I just need to tack it all together to make sure they clear and function properly.

My goal is to have this thing on all fours in a week and a half when my parents come out to visit, although I may have to take the axle back apart to finish some things.

    Off to bed!

Awesome!!! I know I've asked it before, but any ballpark guess on how much money is into it? Just a rough guess? I'm curious :)
    How long until it wheels?

    Thanks guys!

I really have no idea of how much money is into it at this point. Theres about 2K worth of steel in it at least. I'll have another 2K in springs and shocks when done. There'll probably be another 1K in fasteners and joints and such. I have no idea what the 4.6-t18-d20 combo is worth or the axles for that matter. Most of its worth however is my time to build it at this point.

I've contemplated adding it all up to come up with a figure of its worth in case I decide to part with it. Its crossed my mind with rising fuel costs etc....

However, not for a while, I'd still like to have some fun with it!

I did get some corner weights based off of spring deflection.

    Fronts at 666lbs per side
    Rears at 437lbs per side

Keep in mind thats empty, no fuel cell or fuel and no winch. I'm guestimating that 25gals of fuel and a cell is gonna add another 250lbs to the rear and a winch adds another 80lbs to the front.

So rough estimate of total sprung weight is about 2536 unloaded. That doesn't account for the unsprung weight (tires, wheels, axles, 1/2 of all suspension links), so you can add another 1000lbs probably bringing it up to about 3500lbs which seems reasonable.

So I'm assumming fully loaded with 2 peoples worth of camping gear, fuel, spares etc...., it'll probably weigh around 4Klbs. Not exactly light, but not too bad either.

    Way to go Kevo!

Think you'll have it done in time to do some trails this summer?

I don't know. I'm hoping to have it running late summer, but.....................

Currently it rolls which was a huge issue with me and the girlfriend trying to move into our own place. I need to fix the truck and then all of this will unfortuneatly become second priority to finding a house and moving. After recovering from that I should be able to crank away on it again.

Wow, my last post was in april and its allready mid july!

I've taken a couple of months off from working on the jeep. As some of you may know I moved in with my lady and we're renting a house in atascadero now. Things have been great, just no time to work on projects. As it is I've been working pretty hard just to get the garage to a point where I can use it to fab.

    New Ghetto Fab. headquarters.

Of course I thought last night that our new neighbors should really get to know us now, so I whipped out the grinder and welder and started plating my D60 knuckles.

Its just a bit of 1/4" plate on the sides. Hopefully it'll save me from having a massive trail breakdown or having to buy expensive knuckles.

Hopefully I'll be able to get back into full swing workin on this thing.

OK, still trying to work on this thing. I've been busy and its hard to find time with work, housework, and the girlfriend, but I've been making time.

Unfortuneatly, most of what I've been doing is small odds and ends that need to get done to progress. I've made quite a few gussets recently.

I did however get the front axle together. Sandy Cone up in templeton helped me out with my shortened front shaft. My old one was too far gone to recut, instead we were able to get a chromo moser shaft at a decent price.

I've also finished the pitman arm. It sorta took on a direction of its own, but I think it turned out ok. There is a stock waggy pitman arm in there and its been boxed around it.

Added gussets to the nerf supports. I'm planning to run the brake and fuel hardlines on top.

I also finnally got the front bumper on, cutout for a winch line to go through. Today I was able to start on the prerunner hoop. Its pretty much the same size as my last hoop on the old jeep, however it looks larger because the body sits lower on the chassis.

Jeep on all 4 wheels, its resting on the bump stops.

Still waiting on polyp to get my ram in. Hopefully it'll show up this week and they won't sell it to someone else.

Hopefully over christmass I'll be building my fuel cell. I really need to get that done and plumb the fuel system. Not to mention plumbing the brakes, wiring, and body work.

    Enjoy!
