All depends on how much you can source your parts for. I put a 420 in mine. It cost me $7 (seven) and the standard $500 from novak for the adapter. I later found out the secound gear syncro was bad and let it pop out of second. Needless to say SM 420 parts are not easy to find anymore. The parts to fix it ended up at $520 with shipping. What started as a cheap swap snoballed into an expensive one. Anything can and will happen with this stuff. Like you said Mcruff it all depends on the modifications you make and what you start with.

and you end with about 2K R)

some of us have to pay for some of the work, like the d/shafts etc
some, are capable of doing the work themselves
I can handle the mechanics of it; I'm not very good at sheet metal mods or welding

Dang, Now you have me thinking about what I am spending on my build up
    SM465- $100
    D18- free
Rebuild kit for SM465, D18, and adapter $900
    Rebuild of Warn OD $500
    Clutch- $200
    Misc- $100
Thats $1800 and I have not done the work yet so it could go up from there. The only $$ I am saving is I have a 4.3 V6 to bolt it to and do need the adapter for the :v6:
    OUCH!!
OOOPPS for got new driveshafts for custom length! And E-Brake.

I have helped on a couple SM465 swaps they have averaged about $1500 by the time they were done.

Back to a little more of the topic at hand...

I put Holbrooks on and it moved both front and rear axles inboard 1" to the tcase. That reduces the room you will have.

The T90 is a synchro trans, except for 1st gear. No big deal. If you know how to drive a stick, you should be able to grasp the concept of double-clutching to get it back into 1st while on the roll.

Sounds like you are confusing having a synchro'ed tranny with a synchro'ed transfer case, they are two entirely different animals. Teh D18 transfercase will shift on the fly from 2 to 4WD high, but you will have to stop to go into 4WD lo. I'm not aware of ANY transfer case old or new that will shift on the fly into low range from high range. The difference in gear speed is simply too large...

I agree with Steve.... With some practice and double clutching, you can drop into 1st at some speed.....
With that said, the syncro'd first in my T14 is way nicer than the non- synchroed first gear in the T-86....

Coby you shouldn't need an adapter to mount a sm465 to either one of these bellhousings. The bearing retainer on the sm465 is the larger size but that is fit into either bellhousing by boring out the hole in the bellhousing. I had to make an adapter for mruta so that he could put an sm420 in his m38A1 using the bellhousing on his 4.3 that had the larger hole for the sm465.

Mike I guess what I meant to say was I did not need the buick bellhousing. Just was trying to make the point that little things can add up. remember I am starting with a V8 and downsizing.
