    Hey guys,

OK, so I got this wild idea of making a cargo rack that utilizes the rear bow sockets and the roll bar. On this rack, I'd like to make provisions for the jerry cans. My concern is placement of the cans. Here is a few scenarios....

    a) I can make room under the rack in the bed, which keeps them somewhat more secure in case of a rollover, but uses up valuable bed area.

    b) I can mount them on the ends of the rack flush with the body, or on the back edge, but this leaves them more vulnerable in case of said rollover.

    c) Make provisions for both and mount according to the type of trip we're on. On the side for the easy fairly simple trail, or under the rack for the more advanced risky stuff.

Thanks in advance for your advice....

Hmmm...couple of concerns with no real answers to the questions..;) The most popular opinion is that Gerry cans belong on the outside of the body for safety and leakage concerns...

    - I wonder if the bow sockets will support that much wieght? The tops they were designed to anchor would be alot lighter.

    - I worry about tying together the body and rollcage without some accomodation for the difference in movement between them. I used to think about bolting my w/s to the cage at the top, but then watch them move while driving, and I think it would have torn up the w/s.

Both good points. The Jerry cans would be more on the roll bar, so the weight might not pose a problem, but still gets me wondering... Didn't think about the flex issues. Gotta work that out. Thanks for the insights...

I'd have never bought this unit because I'm poor but perhaps someone could make one from scratch and save a few. This thing holds a 33" spare, a 48" high lift, a shovel, an axe and a gerry can. There's another option for a junk rack that sits above the tire. It's a Wilderness combo bumper and trail rack. Sold as a unit and you buy the accessories mentioned above.
