Was there ever a Dana 27 front or rear that had 8 bolts hold’n the ring gear to the differential carrier instead of 10?
If so, what was it, front or rear, and what years/models were they used?

technically, 25's were 8 bolt and 27's were 10 bolt - at least that's what most literature will tell you. but i've come across 27's with 8 bolts. maybe early 27's used left over 25 carriers? i know other members here have come across the same thing. there's been many discussions on 25/27 differences. try a search for more info.

That’s exactly what I’m run’n into. Every technical piece I’ve read says 8 bolt = Dana 25 and 10 bolt = Dana 27, but I’ve read posts here mentioning a Dana 27 with an 8 bolt carrier. To confuse things even worse, a lot of people misidentify their Dana 25 as a Dana 27.
Thanks though, I’ll work out the search feature later.

    just to add...

a 25 has a larger diameter ring gear than a 27, but a 27 ring gear is thicker than a 25 - thats where the 27 gets is strength.

a 25 also uses larger carrier bearings than a 27, thus the axle housings are different.
