I was told when I purchased my CJ that I had a Dana 20 t-case. But I am beginning to think that I have a Dana 300. My shift pattern is 4 lo all the way forward, N, 2 Hi, then 4 Hi all the way back. And here some pictures of the shift linkage. It doesn't look like any Dana 20 that I have ever seen, but it does look kind of like a Dana 300. There is no tag and I didn't have a magnet the last time I was there working on it (it is in a garage 30 miles from my house in town).

    Thanks for the help.

based on the linkage pics, I would say yes, it is a D300.

Based on the pic I'd say a Scout 2 Dana 20. What you have appears from the pic to have a "Texas Pattern" which is the pattern of the front of the transfer case to the tranny. Jeep Dana 300's used a round bolt up pattern. They used a similar linkage/stick set up but the stick was actually on the outside of the mounting ears with a long bolt with bushings and what looked like a lugnut holding the stick on. Jeep 300's didn't use a set screw like what you have. It's possible you have one of the rare (1980 only) IH Scout 2 Dana 300's which did have the texas pattern. I don't remember if the linkage was what you have or if more like the Jeep. A way to tell is the transfer case pan. If it's close to being flat, then it's probably a 300. If it's deep like an 18 or 20 and even depth all around, then probably a 300. Nickmil.

I have done some more research and I am leaning towards the Scout Dana 300. I still haven't had a chance to get the magnet to the rear output. The linkage is identical to the Scout 300, the shift pattern is the same, and the speedo cable is on the passengers side.

    nickmil,

Fill me in a little more on the "rare" 1980 300 with texas pattern. I have been gathering parts to do a chevy 292 and sm 465 swap in a friends 1980 cj5 that I haven't seen. He told me it currently has a 300TC, T4 trans and 2.5 4 banger. I already bought the novak adapter for the model 300. Could he have the texas style 300? I hope not.

    181jeep,
Update us on how the 292 conversion works out. I've always wondered why more people don't use a 292. It is one hell of a torquer.

The Texas pattern 300 was used in 1980 IH Scouts ONLY. All Jeeps used the round pattern. The 300 in your friends Jeep is the round bolt pattern as it is coming off of a T-4. T-176's, SR-4's, T-4's, T-5's in Jeeps all used the round pattern 300. The 1980/'81 Jeep 300 transfer case is a good one to use as it uses a shorter rear output shaft that is stronger than the '82 and up, although they can all be upgraded. The Jeep 300's are much easier to find parts for also. 8) Nickmil.
