I just bought a '66 CJ-5 that has the original D44 rear axle with the axle shafts that have 19 splines on one end and the taper on the wheel hub end. It was fine when I test drove it but the PO flat towed it to my house and after it got here I found the rear axle was non-functional. I checked and found that the key was sheared in the DS rear hub and the hub was split so I'm looking for parts. There are a lot of axles available in this area since the bodies rust away and I've found a number of EARLIER axles but nothing form the 60s that exactly matches what I have. Most of the owners aren't even sure of what year of model Jeep they came out of!

So here's my question: I know the pre-1960 axles had 10 splines and the tapered hub so I can't use the axles BUT can I use the hub???? I have no idea if the axle and bore are the same as the 1960s axles or if the taper is the same. I strongly suspect that they are but I'd like to know for sure. Does anyone know for certain? Also is all of the earlier stuff also 5 x 5 1/2" bolt pattern?

    Thanks!
