My CJ has liability only with Safeco and it runs about $130 a year, that seems pretty cheap to me. Now my '77 C20 p/u is listed as storage or seldom driven and it's got full coverage valued at $8000 and it only cost about $60 a year. They more then make up for it on my Ranger and Silverado!!!

 

i am paying $600 a year for the slug and a 1988 gmc 2500 4x4.
48 years old with clean driving record and rotten credit rating

 

.. but the point is, in VA, if I want to cancel my insurance, I have to surrender my registration... I don't like the state government acting as my conscience, and whether it is $5 or $30 isn't the point. If I'm not driving it for an extended period, I should be able to cancel my insurance without surrendering my registration.

In New Mexico it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle without the mandotary insurance. The way they monitor this is insurance companies send electronically information on active policies and are required to send notice when a policy cancels. The state matches this against active registrations to monitor this. In NM you can print and send an "Affadavid of non Use" and the state won't give you a problem, you can keep your vehicle licenced during a period of non use without surrendering the registration.

 

Same in MA; insurance first, then registration.

All 50 states have some form of mandatory insurance, Fact is many of the laws on the books are to protect you from your neighbot and your neighbor from you.
