Inside Rear View Mirror

I need to remove the mirror glass from the metal frame to do some metal dent repair on the case. Anyone with suggestion for getting it out without tearing things up, including the gasket.

 

Don't do it, Bondo the dents. I had two mirrors, one a 64, small mirror, broke the screw off trying to get it out of the ball. The other was a 66, a little bigger, but it had dark spots in the glass. I removed the glass by slowly un- crimping it, got it out, had a new mirror cut and put it back in. I told the mirror guy that I was going to silicone it back in. he said that silicone would mess the mirror. I crimped the new glass back in and painted it. After getting it wet in the rain with the windshield down, it rusted around the glass, looks ugly. I just bought another mirror, cleaned it up and painted it black, without taking it apart. The original mirror is tinted a little also, so it is little a darker, easier to see for my antique eyes. Just a suggestion, best of luck whatever you do.

 

Silicone releases acetic acid (principle ingredient in vinegar) as it cures, and is mildly corrosive. The silvering on the back of the mirror is actual silver and would likely be affected. Just FYI.

Bondo sounds like a good plan. Tape over the mirror until you are finished.

 

That's exactly why I asked for others experiences before I start. Thanks for the warnings because I could just see me ending up like you did Rick and being unhappy. Truly, thanks. Gonna take the advice.

 

Replacing the mirror is a good idea. As long as you aren't going concourse with your JEEP and just want to see what is behind you. Probably cheaper, too.
