Have you tried having the key to the on position and opening the points to check for spark?

Uh...no havent heard of that option. I am no expert on ignitions for sure. So to get to the points i have to open the distributor, so that would disconnect any spark plug connections. How do what you are asking? Thanks for the help!

As you mention take the distributor cap off. Make sure the points are closed as in not resting on a distributor lobe. Turn the key onto the run position and just push the points open with a plastic handle screwdriver. It will just take a second to either get spark or not. Don't leave the key on of course.

NB this is the coil wire that will spark when you open the points. Position the distributor end of the coil wire somewhere so that you can observe the spark (or no spark).

The distributor cap will be off and will spark across the points is what I'm referring to.

I guess I should have said do this as a first step in troubleshooting. Eliminate any possible simple connections problems.

Ok I’ve done both of these option and found spark. The points were hard to see as they are buried under what I assume is the advance mechanism. But I did it with coil wire at Distributer end and found a spark.

now pulling a plug again to clean and gap then check with plug and without but I need to find my helper to turn over.

Well, i got some life now. Not sure why the spark is working now. I went ahead and cleaned off the rotor and other contacts. Now i have a fuel issue. Put in a new mechanical pump as the PO had a sketchy electric pump fabricated. The mechanical pump is not pumping, or something else is wrong. I installed new lines and clamps, along with a filter, but nothing yet. Well at least one problem solved for now...Not sure how to test if the mechanical pump is defective.
