Howell Odd Fire V6 Fuel Injection Kit Install

    One thing to note. The TBI makes a fair bit of noise compared to a carb setup. None of it is audible at road speed..... but crawling along it really annoyed me.
    I replaced the cheap 9" paper air cleaner setup with this cheap 14" base/lid and my old K&N cotton gauze filter. It really quieted down the throttle body noise. I have a new outerwears pre filter on the way to keep the fine dust from sticking to the oiled air cleaner.
    At a glance you would never know there wasn't a carb under there.......

    It is a 4.3/5.0/5.7 throttle body.

    Looks and sounds great! Glad you got it sorted out. I like the chainsaw mounted in the engine compartment. That video would have looked really cool if your pup was in the driver's seat! :D

    It's running pretty good. I've been playing around with the second "richer" chip that Troy sent me. I like it better than the original.... but it is a tad rich. I need to lower the fuel pressure and try it out. Everyone that has ridden with me is quite impressed. The wild pigs however have not been :D.

    this kit must have a coolant temp sensor. that i think runs the engine when it starts and is cold. as the engine warms up the o2 sensors take over, and lean the engine back out. is your engine getting warm enough, all my 4.3 engines had 195 thermostats.

    Ive been needing to update this thread.....
    In between fall hunting seasons (hunting out of the jeep) I have been working to fine tune the system.
    The richer setup chip that Howell sent me made the jeep run good, but it was just too rich. Even with the fuel pressure adjusted down to 9psi the engine ran really good but I was constantly getting rich codes. I stuck the old chip back in and adjusted the fuel pressure to the recommend 12 psi. Cleared computer on cold startup I get a rich code right about the time the thermostat opens. Within 30 mins or so of driving the jeep will throw a lean code. Neither of these conditions seem to affect the drive-ability. Howell recommended changing the MAP sensor and the O2 sensor. No improvement.
    I sent the jeep hunting for 10 days with my wife and uncle. They had no issues and thought it ran great. They noted intermittent check engine lights and a slightly high idle.....
    The 800 rpm target idle.... I believe this is Howells attempt to get around the odd firing spacing. As I noted before, when hooked to the scanner the RPM fluctuates several hundred RPM (600-900).
    I am hoping to mount a crank sensor on the damper to provide the firing signal to the ECM. From there I hope to get a new chip burned with a target idle of 600 or so RPM.

    did the kit come with the crank sensor and coolant temperature sensor, map sensor too.. might not be too hard to hang the crank sensor. maybey hooked from a couple of oil pan bolts or timing cover bolts, then bent into position. does the crank sensor come with the box that tells the distributor to fire. just wondering . they must have sent you a coolant temp sensor, and told you the ohms it should read cold and hot. I had bought an aftermarket coolant temp sensor and installed it, and my s-10 was worse than the one i changed. then got an oem one that read like 6 ohms different cold than the aftermarket one, and it made all the difference. l I am a little rusty at this stuff now, so i will stop. but ill watch. later paul o oh ps what is this kit called so i can look it up

    oh geeze me again, i was looking at one of you pictures, the hose that your coolant sensor is in, it disappears into the fire wall. is it a heater hose.

    I am looking to add a crank sensor because the kit does not come setup for it. The coolant temp sensor is provided with the kit. It is tee'd in to the heater hose right where the water comes out of the manifold. I have verified with a temp gun and OBD1 scanner that it is getting a good temp reading.

    hi me again, that coolant sensor must be in the hose going to the heater yes. you probably see after using this kit for a while that when you get an engine lite it doesn't mean that a sensor has failed or anything, it just means that " i think" that 2 sensors are at odds. the computer deals with it immeadiately, things happen fast . like if the coolant temp water cools off a little bit and the coolant sensor sees that and sends a little more fuel. but the pipes are hot and now the o2's are seeing less air or more fuel in the exhaust stream, that would make a light. I would like to get one of these kits. i don't want to be a backseat driver. i have a jeep with your engine and an s-10 in the driveway. It is going to be a long christmas -covid weekend so im am going to look at these vehicles and think about it. merry christmas later paul o

    The heater hose will have a consistent reading so long as it is not valved nor far from the manifold. The thermostat housing will have temperature swings with every cycle of the thermostat so it shouldn't cause an issue. The coolant temp sensor is also just a switch to the computer to indicate the engine is to operating temperature and not a processed value of say 195 vs 212 it just sees "go" or "nogo" on this system.
