I am probably asking it wrong, but my buddy mentioned it and a friend today mentioned it was in the jeep bible, something bout if you install a new clutch you take it to a phone pole, or tree and put it up to the object and put the tranny in 3rd and then let go of the clutch. And let the clutch spin to seat it. Is this correct?? I do not have a phone pole, but do hav a tree. I am wondering if i did this will i dig holes in the lawn, because i dont want that to happen. This may cure my dragging clutch. So how do i properly do this? For how long and what gear and such. Or does anyone have a printout of the directions in the jeep bible??

    Thanks!!!

I've done that to un stick a clutch before, by pressing the clutch in and pushing the bumper into a tree. I would think that all you would accomplish by letting the clutch out in 3rd gear while up against a tree would be to kill the motor.

Dan: Sounds like a great way to burn your flywheel and P plate. I have heard of that, and used it, when I owned a Jap MC (Yamaha). Put it in 1st against a wall and let out the clutch. The Jap bikes had a tendency for the clutch to become a bit grabby. It worked, for about a month or so. But now I own a Triumph. Best clutch I've ever use in a MC.

I would Look at this advice with a "jaundiced" eye, if you know what I mean.

Dan: Why do you need to "Seat" it. Is it grabby? Not completely dissengaging? Or what? If you're carefull, and don't "smoke" it, it might be worth a try--but be carefull.

It is grabby i guess. i can get it into gear but it seems like i have to fiddle with the shifter to get it in gear. actually seems to get better as i play with the shifter more often, my firend said it just needs to wear a bit to work properly. it happened to him i guess. it defiantely isnt the slave ir MC, they have been bled and everything works, and it will go into gear, just not all the time.

You just dont know how true that may be. the tress up front , one was damaged pretty good from hurricane charlie. Florida is mostly sand and i have no doubt i could knock the tree over :( But there really isnt a choice, that is almost the sturdyest thing in the yard. I do not need cops comnig after me for knocking over a phone pole

Dan: Give it a try, just don't go overboard. Kind of funny, my '68 with a Centerforce clutch kind of "grinds" going into 1st gear. But only if I try to put it in "immediatly" after comming out of reverse or something. If I let it "sit" with the clutch depressed for a "count of 2", it goes in without a complaint. Seems to me to be the clutch "draging" a slight bit. Takes a while for the P-plate to stop spinning or so it seems. But, no biggie, I just wait or blip the throttle and match it. I love the Centerforce combo in mine. Even Hippo remarked, when he was here and drove it, that the clutch seemed GREAT.

Well i did it. I got the jeep out of the garage and drove it around the neighborhood. it actually shifted pretty good, no lag realy to speak of. Only issue i have now is i think i have a spark plug out of order so it is running a touch rough adn bogged down at th ehigher rpms. I got back from aroudn the block adn put the jeep to the tree and i threw it in 1st gear, and 2nd gear also and ltet it ride a little, the jeep wanted to climb that tree i tell. The tree stayed put and i am feeling a bit more confident on driving the jeep around now. Just have to recheck the spark plug wires and probably add some more air to the tires, they were REALLY out of round for sitting so long. LTBs are great tires but boy to they get flat spotted. I guess it just needed to get driven and worn in
