Jump to post #7 for the latest update.

If you're worried about the images in your threads disappearing because you use a free image hosting service...Take action before it's too late. If you do this now you can grab your images...Especially if you don't have them on a hard drive somewhere.

I learned my lesson years ago when I was struck by Image Shack shutting down free hosting...Some good threads were ruined. I'm not hit by the Photobucket fallout (Yet...I pay a little), but didn't want my threads to die. What you're about to read sounds like a big ordeal, but once I got into a rhythm I edited over 500 pictures/links in one night...Here's how I did it:

I went through every one of my threads that I wanted to preserve (that's the goal...Thread & forum preservation) and made a folder (and sub folders if necessary) on my computer with the same title.

    Something like this...
    - Create a main folder = "Fockers Build".
    - Create sub folders = "Pg1", "Pg2" and so on. I have 22 pages in that thread...Each page has anywhere from 5 pictures up to 20-ish.
    - I went page by page, right clicked and saved each pic in the order it appeared on the page. I named them "Buildpg1_01", "Buildpg1_02" etc. in sub folder "Pg1".
    - Finally, once all the pics were saved, I went and edited each page by replacing the old Photobucket link with the new one.
    - You only have to copy the new link once and then every time you paste the link over the former PB link, just change the last number, i.e:
    "Copy" = wheremypicsarenow.com/Buildpg1_01.jpg
    "Paste" = wheremypicsarenow.com/Buildpg1_01, but change the 01 to 02
    - For threads with only a few images I didn't bother with sub folders.

All my pics are gone from the threads. Not even sure which photo went where

    Focker,
I am barely computer literate so forgive me if I am missing something. Will what you described above keep the thread on ECJ5 from losing the images if/when photobucket decides to screw their customer? It sounds like the way you are doing it the image is hosted by your computer in the end. Isn't that what we have not been able to do all along? If the images can just come from my computer to ecj5 then I wouldn't need photobucket at all.

    Yes, but they've already started.
No, impossible unless you have a rack of servers in your home.

What I'm suggesting is for those who haven't lost their pictures yet, right click save and rename/number back to your computer in the order of how they appear in posts. I'm guessing most weren't that organized when they first updated their pictures.

Okay. I think I get it. After saving them in order on my PC, then find another hosting site, load them there and then replace the images in the ecj5 thread as described in your first post. Right?

    Right... (y)

Reposting should be fast since things are in numbered order.

    But...

Some hosting sites rename images with random names...Just watch for that.

    THREAD UPDATE 9/10/17

    - Thread title changed from "How To Save Your Hosted Images" to current title.
    - I'm going to gear this directly to the Photobucket problem.
    ------------------------------

I made a discovery today while trying to figure out how I could help save some member's threads due to the PB fallout. It's not a fast solution, but it will work with member dedication.

1st step - Install Google's Chrome browser on your computer.
2nd step and the most crucial part - Install the Photobucket Embed Fix <----Click. You can use the FREE version or pay $1.99.
3rd step - View the threads that were damaged by PB.
    4th - Rejoice!
5th - Start saving the images and get to work preserving threads before Dec 2018 (that is when PB will put the final nail in the coffin).

Jump to Post #28 or continue with the method described below (You should probably read post #28). ;)

I did a test today and this was the easiest process I came up with:
    - Create a folder on the desktop and place it to the far right.
    - Open ECJ5 in the Chrome browser and minimize the window. Make sure you can see the new folder you created on the far right.
    - Open the thread in question and simply drag & drop the image over to the new folder.
    - I suggest that you rename the image(s) in the order you're saving as mentioned in post one.
    - Next, find a new (non free) hosting site and upload your images. Some of you know that I have one - Thread = Image Hosting Site, but use whatever.
    - Upload and edit your thread with the new link.

If you have any questions I'm here to help.

Focker, that is BRILLIANT. Thank you so much for posting this info!!

I just realized though that when I try to "Save Image As" for the photos that I can now see on Chrome using the Embed Fixed link, what is saved is not the image that's visible on the link, but the ransom note from Photobucket demanding payment in order to see the image. I wonder if there's a simple work-around to this that would not be overly time-consuming?

Forker, since Photobucket allows you to download your photos back to your own device and a new hosting site is needed, what is the purpose of using Google Chrome? Why not just retrieve your photos from Photobucket if they are not already on your device, upload to the new host, open the thread in question and edit your post to the new host? Does Chrome simplify this?

Have you tried to download your album? I was using Firefox and gave up after multiple attempts. I was trying to help a member who gave me access to their account. I found it near impossible, however, when I installed the plugin last week I was able to do it in one click. Little did I know that Chrome also allowed me to see the original PB hosted images until today when I was trying to figure out how to save these threads.
If you do what I'm suggesting you can rename the images in the order they appear in the thread...Otherwise you will spend hours trying to figure out what image goes where.
For the first time since the PB fallout...I can see the lost images hosted on free PB accounts.

    I noticed...You're uploading like crazy. (y)
That's fair. I'll save you the trouble and provide you with my address.

The nice thing about my site is I bought the software license so it will never go away as long as I'm breathing. Even then, it's parked on a server somewhere on cruise control. I'll probably bring in a partner to help if the breathing thing becomes a problem. The script author is always working on improvements (and listens to feedback), but it doesn't effect my site's control panel unless I update it to the current version. I'm learning more about web codes and have customized my site to be simple and user friendly. Paying for server space and the dot com renewals will of course need renewed too. We're covered up through the next 3 years (at my expense). By limiting the picture size and ratio size allows a lot images to be stored for a low cost. A lot of sites focus on ads plus a fee...It's a business...Obviously I'm doing it for different reasons.

Just to answer your question, no I have not tried to retrieve an entire album. I have retrieved several photos from albums with no issue.

I hope I didn't sound snarky? Not my intention.

I found it nearly impossible and was interested in knowing if you had a different experience. (y)

I am so pi$$ed about this. I did a 3 year frame off Bronco restomod for a friend on the Classic Bronco Forum then one day gone. My son downloaded my pictures from Photobucket to dropbox. I am in the process of reinstalling the pictures into the build. What a pain.
