Actually she does but all that equipment is at her school, most of their robot is made from aluminum to keep the weight down so she welds a lot of aluminum.

Fortunately for me I know a hot rod builder from church and he has welded up several aluminum tanks for his builds and is willing to do mine. I'm hoping to get him all the parts this weekend but I don't think I'll make enough progress so will have to wait a week.

For me a bigger tank just means more unused stale gas to put in the mower.

I joke out of envy. I can only hope one or both of my girls will take an interest in a trade; just as a hobby if nothing else.

Funny you should mention that, Mr. Home School Teacher. You know, every good education includes shop classes and courses in Industrial Arts. Maybe you could modify the curriculum. :sneak:

I'd be interested in seeing that-I've considered some rear wheel well storage boxes similar to an MB.
Storage is always at a premium on a CJ and that's one of the few unused areas.

You want it? It's a 15 gallon out of a CJ-7 with a custom powder coated skid plate.

I put that tank in my 2A. It was a PITA because it really didn't fit the way I wanted to easily with the D44 and the frame i made. There was interference issues that I had to deal with. The right thing to do with the rear mounted gas tank in the early jeeps it make one custom anyway and thats what I would do to do it again. I cut access panels in the floor for the sender and siphon. I really like the rear mounted tank though. Its a lot easier to deal with, fuel doesn't leak out at angles and in my plans it let me sink the seats down more to eliminate "jeep neck" at stop lights. That really was the best part of it.

The concerns about fuel sloshing out of the filler neck with an underseat tank...........isn't there a some sort of a back flow preventer thingy that could be incorporated into a custom built tank? Newer vehicles have these don't they? I understand they can be a pain when trying to fill the tank with a jerry can or anything other than a nozzle at the pump but, maybe there is a bigger or wider version out there.

I would think that the underseat tank might be at least beneficial to center of gravity stuff. That was always my thinking in liking underseat tanks. Two people picking up the back of an old flat fender to move it out of a hole plays in my ind also. I dunno. I often value things for the wrong reasons or weigh the benefits of something and end up being wrong. I guess nostalgia tells me to like the old school mod of having dual under seat tanks and for some reason, I allow nostalgia to outweigh the common thinking that rear tanks are better in every way.

Of course, I'd still use two cans and string over these new fangled rotary dialed telephones everyone is raving about these days.

Can't wait to see this tank get built and installed.

Do gas caps need to be vented if the tank has a vent?

I'm thinking one of these for the fuel filler cap. I could drill and tap it and put a short vent hose like an off-road motorcycle has with a check valve in it. Or I could run a separate vent with a check valve. Seems easier to just vent the cap than run something else off the tank.

I filled in my rear inner fenders just behind the rear tires, that leaves a nice little space between the tail lights and the filler plates. The space could be made into storage space without a lot of work. The rear wheels throw mud and stuff into the rear of the tub where the tail light s mount and rot the tail lights and wiring out. Good luck

Hi, what are you going to do with the toolbox lid? I'm interested in it if your going to get rid of it.

    Thanks AJ

Several have asked and right now keys2a has dibs on it if I don't use it, but I'm thinking about using the lid as an access to under floor storage in the bed of the Jeep. Since I won't have a gas tank back there I can make a storage compartment.

And here's the new gas tank progress in case people are curious but aren't following it my other thread. Looking forward to finishing the baffle welding, it's tedious.
