    Hi:
I introduced myself in the proper section a few days ago. I am a mexican Doctor who is trying to make a surgery or restoration in a cj5 66. Now here it goes my question:
What manual for an early cj5 is good? Haynnes is not working properly for me. For instance, I try to install the clutch kit, but it doesn't show the part assembly. I also need information for the body assembly but it doesn't show either. Maybe I am reading a diferent book. Finally the crossmember of my jeep has two pices of a 2x3 wood in each side of the frame. I ignore what was the reason. Maybe the previos owner wanted to align the two shafts horizontally. Is this good? or I have to leaved inclined?

    Thanks.

P.S. The diference between Doctor and a mechanic, is that Doctor fix the engine with the car running.

P.S2: Anybody can teach me how to show pictures? thanks.

Hi Doc - I'd reccomend this reprint of the factory service manual.

The wood might be original - Jeep used Oak inside some of the "hat channels" that supported the body.

We're working on a step-by-step tutorial for posting pictures, it should be on the site within the next couple of days (right Billy?).

thank you boyink Good advice! The problem I see is lowering the crossmember to align the both shaft, makes inclined the engine, the trasmition an tranfer. Is it normal?

Oh...my apologies - I mis read your post. The oak that Jeep used wasn't in the transmission crossmember, but in the body supports. Using wood in the crossmember mount would be a "bad thing"...

Does your Jeep have a lift kit? Usually the crossmember is lowered to improve the driveshaft angles after a large lift kit is installed.

    No, it doesn'have it.
So what happens if i remove the wood? the both shafts will be angulated. is this good or bad?

Thanks, you are a good friend

If everything is original and unmodified, there were no spacers there from the factory so it should be fine. The U-joints in the driveshafts will tolerate some angle.

Mine had 4, 1/4" spacers from the factory. My Dad's had oak spacers when he got it. Can't imagine them using wood there from the factory, so I don't know....

My 67 used to have the wood spacers and since the original owner never had it apart I know it is factory with the wood spacers. My fathers 70 had metal 1/4" spacers like Patrick says his has. I have since replaced the wood with some 2 inch square tubing. They were to give some space between the tranny and body tub and also to set the driveshaft angles. I would leave the wood in there or replace them with some square tubing or other metal stock.

My Dads *looked* factory. His '67 is a tad older than mine.

This was disscussed somewheres or other a few weeks back. Rumour has it that the spacers are in there to provide enough clearance to the body for the T14 tranny which, with a backup light switch, is apparently is a bit higher than the T90.

Couldn't recall if it was here, on Willys Tech, or, god forbid, buried in amongst the panicky messages about electric window & seat warmer faults on rec.autos.yadayada.jeep+yada :). Someday I just gotta learn hoe to use that "search" button.

My 66 has wood spacers. I can't be sure of their originality though as someone has been slopping silicone all around the area and may have had it apart. I am curious because I want the JEEP to be as original as possible when it's done, if it's ever done.

I think the wood is OEM. Both my mothballed 66 V6 and my 67 V6 (both with T86 A) have wooden spacers. I lived in Toledo for 7 yrs and used to hang out at the previous incarnation of Willy's Motors. The PO had been allowed to salvage out stuff from the old administration building of Jeep. He snagged lots of original blueprints and one of the prints showed spacers but unfortunately did not give the specification for size. In the grand Jeep tradition, I just "eyeballed it" and cut some oak to fit what looked right. I believe some downward tilt to the drivetrain is necessary to allow proper clearance. AM

Houston beleived or not, I still have problems.

Hi, I need help. I finished the sandblasting of my cj5 1966 and I found only three angles holders for te body in the frame. Two in one side but one in the other. It this normal? or some body took it one when I was out? I checked in internet in the companies that sell frames but all they have is late models and they come with four, two at each side. I am talking about the angles where the body rest.

    Thanks!!
