Herculining My Jeep

    So what I want to know with any of these bedliners is how do you get it off? I mean, what if down the road you need to weld on the panels? How hard was the prep work for this stuff? I have been thinking about doing this in my truck, but my buddy didn't like the way his turned out.

    The prep work isn't bad at all. Of course mine was because I had to fix my floor first. Basically it's just lightly sanding the paint. You don't want any shiny surfaces.

    As far as getting it off. Well I guess I'll find out later but I would imagine I will have to take an electric sander to it. But I wouldn't want it to come off too easy, that's kind of the point right?

    Try paint stripper. Take it right off.
    $19.00 a gallon and pressure wash to rest off.


    Geez has anybody ever heard of ACID?

    Well - OK. I just did a quick experiment on the rear fenderwell of SSDutch. The Herculiner was applied by the PO so I have no idea of his prep method.

    I dribbled a spot of the following on the Herculiner (its what I had on hand):
    1. Brake fluid
    2. POR Solvent
    3. Acetone
    After ~ 3 minutes I took a screwdriver to those three spots plus an untreated spot.

    • I was able to scrape through the Herculiner in the untreated spot.
    • The acetone had evaporated. Scraping *might* have been a bit easier, can't really say.
    • The spot treated with brake fluid showed good promise - the Herc was peeling up as I pushed the screwdriver under it.
    • The POR solvent hadn't evaporated, but didn't seem much easier to scrape through.

    I'll check again in ~30 minutes.

    Just be careful with brake fluid. It will take paint off without a problem.:)

    Well then problem solved. Just curious, if you take off the Herc are you just gonna paint the inside. What don't you like about it?

    Either I'll just paint the inside or I'll use smooth Durabak. The Herculiner is just too dang rough. The kids can't even put their arms on the wheelwells as an armrest.

    I have the stuff in my Bantam too - and get skinned knuckles every time I load/unload it.

    Plus - unless I scrub it out really good first with Simple Green - it oxidizes and leaves black marks on everything.

    I also don't like the way it traps dirt and sand. I pretty much have to vaccum it out to get it clean.

    Of the three removal approaches I'm trying, brake fluid is the clear winner. The other two have evaporated and leave the Herculiner pretty much as is. I can already peel out the Herc. that had brake fluid sitting on it.

    Guess I know what I'm doing this winter...;)

    I'd love to see posts after you get the smooth stuff in. I went with the rougher to help cover and fill all the pitting and the make shift floor I had to make in mine. I'm pretty happy with it, What a huge difference it makes in the appearance. I may go with the smooth stuff on the roll bar and bumpers eventually but we'll see.R)

    IMHO Herc looks great the day you get it done...but 6 mos down the road after being in the sun and out in the dust/dirt it starts to not look so good.

    I was at a Jeep show last year and saw a number of Jeeps that had the interior done with Herculiner (in addition to my own) - they all looked the same...dusty/dirty/faded.....;)

    I can still recover the trailer interior by first scrubbing it out with the Simple Green and hosing it out, then hitting the whole thing with Armour-All.

    But then the trailer sits out in the sun all day long.

    Your not instilling me with a whole lot of confidence in my recent project.:)

    My dad is making me a replacement cover for the tranny hump. After I get it I will Herc that and then apply another coat to the rest of the interior followed up by the UV protectant. When I get to the point of replacing my tub or interior pieces I plan on using the smooth stuff. I won't have to worry about covering up previous mistakes then.

    Yea...sorry...:oops:

    I didn't do the UV thing - not sure when that came about as no one mentioned it when I did the Bantam.
