The Storey Family's Chief Financial Officer (Mrs. Storey) has authorized expenditures on the M416 jeep trailer. :) I'm going to order a new rear panel from JeePanels but I want to do a modification for a tailgate. Any tips, pics, examples, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I'll be having the job done by professional shop folks as I have neither the experience nor the equipement to do it myself. I've heard some tidbits about the trailer sides weakening due to the tailgate cutout. I'm thinking, cut a section out of the back for the tailgate but leave some on each side as a back wall and strengthen with some sort of L-channel along the floor to the back wall? What about latches or hardware? Suggestions?

Somewhere I saw a post on this site where someone had a tailgate with some sort of solid pin 'inside' the round top rail that would slide from the tailgate part into the left and right side of the back panel, to hold the tailgate in place. For the life of me, I can't find that posting. :? Anyone remember that one? Seems like it was only within the last couple of months.

    Thanks!

Thanks guys! The more info and pics I have, the easier it will be for me to plan my trailer modification.

I also noticed on the website for JeePanels Plus that they can do some custom modifications so I called them up and he said he can fabricate a M416 rear panel already with a tailgate, like he does for the civilian trailer. He recommended some sort of side sections like on the civilian model that add strength needed due to the tailgate (he said most put their taillights on this part, as well). He's going to send some pics of the civilian one he fabricates but he said he can fab one so that it is virtually bolt-on or weld-in, except adding hardware for the chains and so forth. I'll try to post pics when I get them. There may be other M416 trailer owners interested.

this 416 came from a junior collage here in town.
I believe they did the fab work for the tailgate as it was used for grounds maintenance.
some pics of their work. I don't know what's behind the bolt at the bottom; 2 bolts, one on each side for the lower hinge pivot; maybe the gate panel just pivots on those 2 bolts ???

the blue tailgate is a pic of my Bantam tailgate.
can take more and better pics of both if needed.

    jpflat2a,
did you fab the top for the blue Bantam trailer? is it fiberglass? I would be interested in any and all details you would be willing to share. I have a 46 Bantam Civilian trailer that I want to fab a top for without hacking up the trailer as it is very original (I am the second owner, it had been in the same family before I got it since it was new in 46).

it was made by a fellow Jeeper in N. Calif.
he made a dozen or so: for Bantams, 416s etc
that's how he found out the trailer beds are different sizes.....
    I paid $400 for mine
it has folding table legs up underneath
when you take it off, just open the legs to keep it off the ground
the tie downs and straps were fabbed by a friend
I know of 2 that haven't sold and are most likely still available
I've had mine now for 5-6 years I think

    Bringing back an old thread.

Russo, you mentioned you had some pics of a pin for a M416 trailer tailgate. Do you still have these pics? I remember seeing them a long time ago and can't find them anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My email addy is jeeepguy@gmail.com

BTW, I'm asking here because I can't seem to be able to PM anyone.

    TIA
