That’s a matter of opinion. I know a lot of guys are real high on the Quadrajet, even heard it referred to as “hillbilly fuel injection” because it will keep metering fuel at some crazy angles.
Holley makes a Truck Avenger meant for Jeeps for the same reason, it’ll keep metering fuel at angles.
But really, no carb on the planet will match fuel injection for running at angles.

FI: the best single thing you can do if your off road includes a lot of "angle" and/or big elevation change. It really is worth the money, whether adapted OEM or aftermarket.

If this is what you're after I might suggest propane. There are videos that show engines running upside down, submerged under water, and other crazy stuff. If you prefer gasoline, then I like the Quadrajet. Small primaries for driveability and economy, yet large secondaries when you and the engine want them (via the air valve). Be careful in the selection though, there are dozens of applications.

might have to switch to a quadrajet later on. Don't really want to go to EFI or propane..No real extreme off roading. Which one for a 283 sbc with lots of city driving? Stock 5.83 gears and T90A..

Holley truck avenger vs the edelbrock off road carb? How much trouble would the Holley be with daily driving?

Alright guys so I got the spring loaded needles in today. I waited to tear down the carburetor until today, so I would have a fresh memory of where the pieces go. Well it seems like the needles were fine, and they even had springs on them. The floats did need adjusting, so I took care of that. Well I got the carb put back on the old girl and she's showing the same symptoms. Rough idle, will start and die immediately, backfire through the carb. Sometimes it would also rev up like it was redlining, and it would stay revved, instead of dying immediately. That would cause me to panic for the key to turn it off. It also did this before I put the new spring loaded pins in and adjusted the floats. I double checked my firing order and it's still correct. The good news is I have to yet to catch the carb on fire again. Any ideas??

Well I just caught the carb on fire again, so there goes that. I read on another forum that my valves might be too tight, and that would also cause this. I'm going out right now to check since I was tinkering with them the other day, forgot all about it.

do you have fresh gaskets between the carb, adapter, and intake?
    are the secondaries stuck open?
I think pics and or a video might be in order.

Well I adjusted the valves and played with the tuning a little bit. I did get some improvement, the engine will run if I keep my foot on the gas. It is slow to respond and is bogged down. It won't idle at all. I'm still getting a backfire, and flames. Are the little jets on the carb that spray the fuel supposed to continually spray fuel, or do the just give a spurt when the accelerator is pressed? My fuel pump is leaking oil now too... I think I'm gonna let the mechanics take it from here. I'll let ya'll know what they come up with. Thanks for all the help anyhow.

Could just be a pump gasket. Is it leaking from the seal surface between the pump and engine block or around the diaphragm? Regardless, sounds like you’ve got more than one problem going on and there comes a time when you need to just call in the cavalry.
    Keep us updated.

I was hoping someone else would chime in because I don’t know a damn thing about the Holley TA other than they make one and about what they look like.
I do, of course, like the Edelbrock for a street carb and think it would work great for general every-day use and you already know my opinion for off road use. For a 283 I would think the 500cfm would be the choice because I think the 600cfm would be a bit big.

I have the TA470 and ran it for several years before swapping to PJII FI. I am putting it on my son's rig, and feel it's realy worth pursuing if you don't want to go FI. No issues with it as a daily driver, use a vaccuum gauge to get it dialed in.

Ok so I got an update from the shop. I guess it takes a week to figure out that they don't know how to install bearings, and lockout hubs, and that Carter AFB carb is no good. So I didn't get anything accomplished with the mechanic. I found a Qjet from a carb shop that I can pick up this weekend after it's rebuilt. The only Qjet I could find locally was electric. I have to wire up this electric choke, and as I understand its only one hot wire. I don't know where I should tie it into the 12v. I know the solenoid is not a good tie in. Can it go straight off the battery, or will it constantly draw?

No, not straight to the battery and yes, just one 12V line. You need a line that is hot only when the ignition switch is turned on.

Alright so I got the new Qjet hooked up today, and the ole girl is purrin like a lion. I hooked up the electric choke with no problems. Thanks for all your help Corveeper, and everyone else. You guys are a huge help. I also just received all the parts I ordered to install an aluminum radiator, so that'll be my next step in the restoration. Actually first I need to figure out why the fuel pump is leaking oil at the gasket, but no big deal. I'm starting to wish I had a nice garage to work in. I'm out here in my backyard with the ole girl on a concrete slab, roasting in the sun and getting eaten up by mosquitoes. This Florida summer is harsh this year. Thanks again everyone!
