Hello, just purchased a 1973 CJ5 that I plan to do a restoration on. However, I believe the windshield frame has been swapped from a later model. Can someone please help me identify what year(s) this might be?

You will also need a new top. The 76 and up windshields are narrower at the top and lean back further. Any roofing you have now will not be compatible with the correct windshield.

Thank you all for the replies and quick help! It appears I am on the hunt for yet another period correct part(s). I love the fact that the early Jeeps were so adaptable right up til the time where I hate they were so adaptable...LOL I spent Tuesday pulling what seemed to be a mile of crazy wiring installed by the previous owner just so I can figure out what works/does not, and to better assess what I will need. I am sure I will have PLENTY of questions.

The later ('76-on) windshields are more plentiful, and they can be made to fit on the the earlier models. There's nothing really wrong with them, other than they are not right for the rest of your Jeep. We had a technical page that showed the various windshields - appears it was lost in some past disruption.

You want the windshield with the bottom wipers, outside motor, and rectangular glass with an arched top.

when I buy a new frame does one half of the hinge come with the frame? I see the frames for sale (Omix) and also what appears to be one half of a hinge set also for sale. Just want to make certain I get everything I need to do this.

DONT BUY OMIX!!!! you're probably gonna have fitting issues, reproduction jeep body parts have a bad reputation for not fitting right.

@Twin2 Thank you for that link/info! this looks more like what I would expect for a Hinge set.

@Tyler Vaughan - Is this a universal statement? Should I consider all Omix parts "bad"? If this is the case it obliviously limits me to locating used, NOS, etc which I am seeing can be pretty hit or miss for the intermediate year Jeeps. While I want to do this rebuild right and as period correct as I can, I do not want to turn this into a multi-year project just because I have to wait for an original part to become available.

It's not that all OMIX parts are "bad" per se, but you're going to have fitment issues. Unfortunately, if you can't find NOS/Used, they're the only source for some things, and you just have to deal with it. Same goes for Crown, or Dorman, in my experience. I avoid them where I can, but for some stuff (and not just on jeeps) you don't get much of a choice anymore.

The hinge kit is probably ok. A decade ago those hinges were really scarce, and the aftermarket replacements aren't cheap. Places like Barney's might have domestic repops. The Omix windshield frames are reputed to fit badly. I'm sure you can find used parts if you are willing to pay a premium price and spend enough time looking. First I would try www.car-part.com If you find a cooperative junkyard, they might put put out the word for a yard with a '69ish-75 CJ they are parting out. In TX you could try Collins Bros. though they are usually very expensive. There are Jeep junkyards out there - check with your local Jeep/4x4 clubs and online forums. Search Craig's List and Facebook Marketplace. Advertise WTB on all the Jeep forums. Go to Jeep gatherings and swap meets. Likely it will take some time to find what you want.
