Anyone know if a computer controlled EF HEI can be used for an OF conversion. Sparky and I just noticed a four pole plug that is not present in other HEI pics. I have indicated where the wires come out of the distributor by orange in this pic: The pickup assembly wires seem like they will hook up the same, but are there other possible issues?

This is a pic from cjoffroad's write-up, not the one we are working on.

A wrecking yard guy told me once that the computer controlled HEI had an extra wire coming out of it. What it's for I couldn't tell you.

That would be an ESC (Electronic Spark Control) HEI. Designed to be used with a full feedback carb., with a simple ECU. Stay with the pre- feedback, non ESC HEI.

all hooked up and no spark making it to the plugs. Where to begin diagnosis? The power is hot into the cap. Could this be an ESC issue as Patrick stated, or something more simple? Is it possible to buy a new module that goes in the distributor or do you have to buy a complete assembly?

FYI----- I bought a new ignition module (NAPA part number TP45SB, asked for '75 Buick apollo 231 V6) and replaced the old (presumably ESC) module. My jeep got spark, fired right up, and runs like a champ. So, you can use an even fire HEI from a 231 Turbo with electronic spark control, provided that you follow these directions:

    http://www.cjoffroad.com/writeup.asp?WU_ID=21&noAdd=1

and also replace the module. My parts list all from NAPA is:

    RR194--distributor cap
    RR173--rotor
    RR204--coil ground strap
    2930---8mm plug wire set
    IC18SB--ignition coil
    MP105--pickup assembly coil
    TP45SB--Ignition module

for a grand total of $115, plus the $35 I gave for EF distributor=$150

I used a 3/8 x 16 thread 1.5" button head bolt from True Value for the intake bolt

Many thanks to Sparky, New Belgium Brewing Company, and Coopers Brewing Company 8)
