And i set it a 9 degrees, went for a run, and engine was better than ever before. However i do not know if it should peform better, i know noone here in denmark with such a jeep, so i will probable never know. The point is, i am satisfied now, thank you very much for your help guys, probably not for the last time :)

    Best regards Mikkel

That is good to hear. Now that you know how it runs at 9 degrees, you may want to experiment with it a little. You can always set it back to 9 if your other setting is not good. If you do decide to try to experiment then advance it about 2 degrees each time you try. Good luck..

Hadn't been on this site in a while. Glad to see you got your HEI installed and your jeep running well . I installed an HEI on my 75 w/258 a few years back and it has been fantastic!! Of course, ANYTHING would have been an improvement over the Prestolite ! I'm sure you changed out your plugs, and I probably missed it reading over the replies, but your gap should be much greater than normal..approx .045.

Here's a pretty good link regarding the 258 and HEI upgrade.

Pictures of your Jeep would be nice !

yea i changed plugs, and increased the gap.

I took the jeep for a LONG run this saturday, and i can conclude that timing is still not in the right spot. Accelerating makes it shake, until i stop accelerating and just drives at same speed. So i will try to advance 2 degrees, and test again and so on.

I actually read somewhere that is is your advanced timing that counts, and not the initial.

    And pictures, ofcourse.

Bought this spring in the nederlands, driven home with a transport company to denmark. Registered as a veteran vehicle, means cheap insurance and tax. I want to keep it as original as possible.

You have a very nice Jeep. Just for fun, take a look at your u-joints. Sometimes they can make a shaking feeling while accelerating.

Go under Jeep and shake your rear driveshaft, Look for any movement at each end. Play in the u-joint. Probably nothing wrong but worth a look.

NICE looking Jeep!!!!! Just read this thread and it looks like these guys gave you some great advice! I have also swapped in the HEI and like it alot. I didnt see anyone mention anything about making sure you use a matching set of gears on the distributor and cam. I dont know if there is much difference between the 6 and 8 cylinder as far as the gears go but....I have the 8 cylinder. I got maybe 150 miles on my jeep before the HEI stripped the teeth on the cam gear!!! May want to ask these guys about it. On the v8;s you can take the gear off the old distributor and put it on the HEI. I didn't know this so it cost me some time and money to do the repairs.

A little trick I use on the V8 to find TDC on "compression" is to put a cotton ball in #1 cylinder. Watch the harmonic balancer as it approaches 0*, if the cotton ball blows out, your on TDC compression. Really doesnt matter much though as you can always just put the balancer on 0* and crank it up. If it acts up then just rotate the distributor 180* and you've got a good starting point!!!!

Make sure the gear on the distributor shaft matches the gear on the cam. I made this mistake and ruined the cam gear. Steel on bronze don't play well togather.........
