    Hey guys
I'm new here and soaking up the wealth of knowledge. I have a 65 cj5 tuxedo park that my wife's great grampa bought new. I've had it about 10 years and have been through just about everything on it but the heater core blew up and I'm having trouble sourcing a new one. Anybody know the part number for the correct core.
    Thanks Jesse

    Welcome!

    Can you define "blew up?"
Over the years I've often found they can be repaired.

It didn't blow up... just sprung a leak. I figured a new one was cheaper then having it fixed.

Repairing leaks in a heater core is a pretty basic job, if you are not equipped to do it, any radiator repair shop should be able to take care of it. If you choose not to not to repair it, I am sure someone here has one they can spare. A new core may be available from Walcks or other vendors. Good luck!

You posted while I did, propane torch, flux and solder are really all you need to repair it.

Welcome from Michigan, I agree with having yours repaired. I had a real radiator shop redo mine and it came back like new. The replacement ones you buy today may or may not be as good of quality as the original repaired. Just my $.02. Good Luck with your Tux.

Try a search here for "placebo heater", since you'll have it apart anyhow there's a few upgrades that can be done to the stock heater to improve it's performance.

Summit Racing had one, I think they are discontinued. You are not going to find a direct replacement, only something close. I would try to repair. If repairing, need to make sure you prep/clean the area good.

RockAuto shows this Spectra and another off-brand in regular listings.

More Information for SPECTRA PREMIUM/COOLING DEPOT 94478
    More Information for OSC 98478

I can't give you the Jeep PN because I do not have a parts book that goes back that far. I'd look at the links and pick the one that matches the existing core.

JMO - I would not bother to have a heater core repaired if I could just replace it. Heater core effectiveness goes down as they get old and fill with sediment, and efficiency of the placebo heater is poor anyway so why go with an old core?

A better route, if you really need a heater, is to upgrade to the Summit or Mojave heater. site:earlycj5.com summit heater - Bing

Been there. The new replacements don't fit right and are not as big, thus less heat from a system not big anyways. Get your repaired or let them solder the center onto your tanks. More money but not worth trying the replacement route. I wasted time and money only to find I'd have to jerry rig parts to fit/bolt up. Just not worth it in my opinion.

Spectra is a good brand. Dimensions are given on the spec sheet. Measure your core and compare before you decide.

    To all,

I replaced the heater core in my 66 cj 5. I purchased the core from NAPA, but have lost the invoice. This is what the core looked like and these are the dimensions of the replacement core in the link below:

Jeep Air - CJ5 Heater Core - Heater Cores

I think it was 40 bucks or so from NAPA.

Well, if you want to get *technical* about, yeah- sure.

There was a post last week about modifying the box to re-circulate- that seems like a very good idea.

Thanks for the leads and ideas.... the problem I've found is the dimensions are of the core and doesn't take the tank sizes into account. I think I'll go see the radiator shop.
    Thanks Jesse

Radiator shops can repair leaks AND flush out any sediment to restore original heater cores to their original performance, such as it is. Net searches will reveal repair and modification ideas for these heaters. I usually soak a core with muriatic acid, then flush with soda to neutralize any residual acid, the usual safety precautions apply. Good luck!
