Would the potential gain be worth the money spent? What I mean is, how much can a header really help an F head? I remember reading of an F head exhaust upgrade on the CJ3b page, but I'm sure no one's really dyno'd this :)

Hard to say, I certainly don't know. Here's a current thread running about boosting F-head performance... also more if you search. http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37387

The header mentioned in the CJ3B story is still being made by that performance company, but they're very pricey. I personally doubt that you could affordably get enough extra power from an F-head to justify the expenses, but I also plan to tinker with my motor as much as I can to squeeze a little more goody out of it. Even if it's just a little more torque or a smoother idle.

I'm also a big fan of new cams. As a cam lobe wears, the valve loses lift and moves less air. I believe cam lobes wear down a lot more than people think.

I'm going to go in the other direction and replace the header on mine put on by the PO and go with a stock set up. Right now the header sits lower than stock where it attaches to the exhaust pipe. It's really a booger job.

Just dropped my F head off to get some headers made for it. We are still playing with some numbers to see exactly what I'm going to end up with, and having to play with it to make sure you can get to the valve cover, but the collector should end up underneath pretty close to were the stock pipe is now. The builder will set up a jig so he can make some more, and depending on pipe prices it will probably be under $200.00. I'll post some pics and his final price when I am done.
As far as the gain vs. the cost... I think it will be worth it in torque gain and heat extraction. I should be getting it back sometime around Thanksgiving.
