Ok guys, time for the big showdown. I've already heard good things about Rust Encapsulator, and until now that is what I had planned to use. However now I'm hearing about Hammerite, and was thinking of giving it a try. SO, I'm wondering
    A) what anyone who's worked with it thinks about Hammerite. I am particularly interested in oppinions on how it holds up over time - Mike I know you seem to like it so far, but yours just went on. ;)
    B) if anyone's used both, how do they compare?

I'm gonna be making this decision this week, so any help I can get is GREATLY appreciated...

Can't say I have used rust encapsulator however I have Hammerite on my frame and it's been there for 10 years and I still can't get it off. Abrasion resistance is amazing, hell you can whack it with a hammer and it won't come off. Goes on easy, cheaper than the others.. comes in a variety of colors and finishes.. what's not to like. The only PITA is getting it. Mail order is the only way I have been able to get it. Local distributors don't exist as far as I can tell. Ace used to carry it but they stopped.

I think ya gotta define your intended use...frame? Axles/springs, etc? Underbody? As primer for a finish coat?

    Good point, Mike.

Probably gonna do the frame with just the rust protection, depeding on durability (hammerite is definitely looking like the way to go there). Same goes for the springs, axles and such. Everything that's not gonna be painted pretty, really.

Body panels will be using it for the base coat. Still planning to do undercoating on the body either way.

PS - BUBBA, didn't someone say you can ask the local Ace to order it for you? Or is that no longer the case?

nope tried that, it showed up in their computer but it is no longer in stock nor will they get it. Here is the homepage for hammerite http://www.masterchem.com/pages/default.aspx?NavID=42

Some small independant hardware stores can get it from their distributor (orgill brothers) but it is just as easy to order it and wait 3 days from Jamestown..

Hey Mike, how much did shipping cost for you? Looking to get some rattle cans, but they won't tell me shipping until its packed and ready to go.... I don't really like that, I want to know how much this is gonna cost me before I buy any.

If I'm reading the invoice right, they covered shipping.

The order had sat for a bit...I think they were out of stock on the spray cans. I contacted their customer service just saying "Ship what you have..I need it"..then it all shipped that same day.

NNOOOOOOOO! Apparently you missed my post on route 66 in another thread.. they are bad.. bad bad bad bad! They refused to answer any phone calls, e mails or anything for over a month.. and then magically the stuff shows up after I ordered from Jamestown. Granted I did get what I ordered but after 6 weeks and not being able to contact them at all. I was very unhappy.. I'll pay the extra $15 from Jamestown...

Ok, didn't realize that was Route 66...

Besides, their webpage is fubared. The Gloss Black is the default option on the dropdown menu. When I go to check out, it tells me, "Hammerite, Smooth Finish, Aerosol: This product requires a menu selection"

I select a different color, works fine, gloss black, nope...

Actually, it saved me, since if it had worked my order would be placed by now. ;)

PS - other problem with Jamestown besides shipping is all they have online right now is a case... I don't really want to drop $70 plus who knows what shipping right now, I just want to get a few cans to try it out.

I'll call them after work and see what I can work out.

I also found some at the local Zettlers here in Columbus. Put a couple of coats on the gas tank skid and a couple of the crossmembers last night. I got a quart and a rattle can. They had every color in spray and quarts. $12 a qt and $5.99 for rattle can. Stuff works awesome.

I'm just itching to try it out. Should have mine in a few days. Got the tranny x-member and skidplate wirebrushed yesterday in preparation, and started in on the frame.

Here's a question: how well does this stuff hold up on top of existing paint? Dutch's frame still has plenty of paint in spots, so I'm wirebrushing off all the loose stuff right now. My plan is to get some paint stripper tonight and start getting everything else off, but is this necessary?

My gut says yes, but hey, if I can get away with one less step that'd be ok by me. But if its questionable I'll take the high road and strip it all.

    From there web site.
    http://www.masterchem.com/pages/default.aspx?NavID=43

    What surface preparation is needed?

Remove all loose rust, paint and mill scale, by scraping, sanding or wire brushing the substrate. Remove all dirt, oil, grease, salt contamination from ocean or street salt, and mildew, using an approved cleaner, fresh water and a commercial mildew remover. Rinse surface thoroughly and let dry before continuing. Smooth or hard, slick surfaces must be deglossed or abraded by sanding or grit blasting. A new or clean metal surface that is very smooth and/or glossy, or non-porous MUST be sanded with a minimum 80 grit sandpaper. DO NOT use any rust converter, or any other acid or conversion type product to clean or prepare a rusted surface before applying a Hammerite coating. Aluminum and galvanized surfaces require a prime coating of Hammerite Galvanized and Aluminum Primer.

Professional painting practice requires previously painted or shop primed surfaces must be 'patch' tested for compatibility. Apply Hammerite to a small area and expose for 72 hours minimum and check for adhesion and any signs of lifting or cracking, etc.
