Clean 'em up real good near the backing plate and search real close with a good light. See if there isn't a tiny 'vent' hole drilled in the axle tube. Might be almost invisible filled with crud.

I dimly recall doing that once, although maybe it was the Timken clamshell axle in my Jeep truck.

Thanks I'll check it out. I tore the rear axle all down and didn't see it, but if its tiny I could have missed it easily.

Resurrecting this old thread as I'm about to crawl under 59 CJ5 for some overdue maintenance.

Using Howard's chart and I have this grease: https://spicerparts.com/parts/lubri...al-off-highway/spicer-ultra-premium-synthetic

Will this grease work for all the points that call for Chassis, Universal Joint, and wheel bearing lub? Or should I be looking for something different?

I have GL4 for the transfer case and differentials. Searching threads for steering housing lube. Manual calls for SAE 80 but I see others are using grease.

    Thanks for the check!

Not a grease fitting but the little (oil?) Cup on the speedo is my nemesis.

My rear 44 had zerks and vents.
