GPW stuff

alrighty, i am out of my element i am an intermediate cj5 guy so i'm not so well informed here. Me and my dad went out to go look at a Gpw and a cj3a. the gpw i am 75% sure is a gpw frame because of the machine gun mount. It has a Gpw/MB windshield and hood. heres where it gets iffy. the body is a cj2/3/m38 fiberglass body, in good shape mind you but my dad is in this for a Restorable ww2 jeep. it is molested. the interior is flat out weird made up by some confused gear head in the early 80s or 70s. the kicker is the motor. It is a inline 6 with dual horizontal carbs on the pass side. I have never seen anything like it. i don't know what the tranny is only that its pattern is R-1-2-3. it has an overdrive and stock TC. What is an abortion like this worth? there isnt a data plate on the thing except a glued on 1970s emissions plate for the swapped motor i am guessing. any easy way to find the serial # or build date on the frame to trace it? picture time





Alrighty now the what i am assuming is a 3a. it has an F head swapped in? i am not so great with the old motors so excuse me if i am wrong. the back of it is all cut up and diamond plated. The rear end is offset and appears to be regular dana 44 style except it is dually. with added coils. its weird. i wrote down its serial number plate. 451-CB1 48506

Im not sure but that looks like a datsun 240z motor. Intresting dualy kit was it once a trencher what does it have for a pto?. id say 1k is a decent price they look solid. try talking him down a hundred or two

 

i didn't try to crawl under for the pto. its cold wet and cold up here. my question really with the Gpw is if we started stripping anything not native to the original jeep would we have a chance at offsetting the purchase price and still have a frame and some parts to restore?

I'd say pass and keep looking.
the cheapest price doesn't always mean it's the best deal.
if truly looking for a GPW/MB, better to pay more and find one that's at least 80-90% complete.
At least that's what I'm reading out of your comments.

 

in case anybody cares the motor is same as a triumph TR6. who does that?

 

To be honest, theres not hardly a thing there that relates to a GPW to me. I would keep looking. The cost of rebuilding is basically having to purchase everything to make it right. Not worth it in my opinion

 

Yes id say if your intention is to restore a gpw back to factory those arnt what you want

 

Personally, if your wanting a MB or GPW restow I'd start with more than just a frame. I'd keep looking. Start looking in the sunny/dry states and be ready for a road tip. We can help you look too.

It might be a stretch for the budget, but it runs drives and it is a GPW. Lots of the leg work is done for you though, which is most of the fun of having a flatty. A nice GPW restow is gonna cost at least that much.


Don't forget to go to the www.g503.com message board, they have a WTB section for MB, GPW, willys post a WTB and see what develops.

 

When your not looking is when you'll find one. We found our '45 MB on the roadside when I was out on a crane rental. Looks like a good deal to build a flatty but not a GPW or MB restore. If thats an M38 windshield it looked like some converted it to a 2 piece windshield.

 

Man, those are both neat! Good thing they're not clear across the country or I'd buy 'em and wheel 'em just like they are.

Thats alright. I am convinced there is no good condition cj within a days drive of me that is rust free.

 

so a grand for both... that puts the one by me for $500 just about right for the price. did you see that post???? , whatyear about is that flattie ....it had willys script on the hood. I don't know the early stuff either.sorry.
