I have a question concerning the GM HEI swap.

When changing the drive gear from an 87 360 over to the GM do I also swap over the thin spacer with it? I don’t believe so as the spacer hasn’t been mentioned in any of the HEI write ups, but thought I would ask.

You mean a spacer between the gear and the bottom of the housing? If so, the main thing is you don't want too much freeplay in the shaft, nor do you want it tight, so use your judgment.......... Just an opinion, but .018-.020 up to .028- .030 should be good...............

    Thanks for the reply Patrick.

The 87 360 ignition has a very thin spacer between the drive gear and housing. The GM doesn’t have a spacer between the drive gear and housing, but rather five small stubs built into the housing. It appears that the GM stubs will take the place of the AMC spacer and the fact that nothing has been mentioned about the spacer in any HEI swap articles I have to believe it doesn’t swap over. Has anyone completed the HEI swap?

When i did this I did not use a spacer and it works really good.

If you have to much play in the saft then use a spacer but if it looks good with out do not use it
