I went to mount my generator for the first time since I started restoring my jeep and found it doesn't fit correctly in the mount. My generator bracket is 5" 7/8 This was the one the jeep was running when I took it apart for restoration... I guess it was like this back then, but its been a long time so I didn't remember. It's a 63 CJ6 with a 12 volt system. Do I have the wrong generator and or wrong mount? It also seems to hit the front engine plate like the bracket on the generator isn't long enough. Here are a couple pictures:

I think you are missing a couple of spacers.

Do you have the key to those letters? I think that image is from a M38A1, not a CJ. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It still seems strange that the forward part of the generator seems to hit the top of the engine mount plate. This image shows more room albeit from a military one. I can't seem to find much for civilian ones...

Does anyone else have some insight into this issue?

I had the same problem, Howard said that the rear chive, pulley, is for the governor, the belt goes to the drivers side. When I put the generator on the belt scrubbed on the timing cover. I moved the generator forward and ran it on the front chive, pulley. I have a sliding bracket I had made that allows you to slide the Generator forward to line up with the front chive, you have to then shim the adjusting arm to suit how far you moved the generator. If you want the bracket, I will send it to you, for the shipping cost, I have a one wire Chevy alternator on my Jeep now. PM me if you want it.

You are right, the picture was military.

Key is here below, but not sure it will help.
It may be that your generator is not be the original.

Other makes had very similar generators in that period.
Was your jeep converted from 6 volt?

Also there were several different engine support plates for F-heads.

Still looks to me as if you may need spacer(s).

I have a generator from an F-head that I measured, it is 6 and 3/4" inside to inside of the front and rear mounting surfaces on the housing. Does yours compare to that?

I will note that your generator looks like the one I have.

Mine is a 6 volt measures 7 1/8". Looks like you are missing spacers as noted. Front mount is in front of the motor plate on mine.
