I have a 73 cj5. Just bought a new 15 gallon tank. Does 73 jeep get a skid plate or straps or nothing at all.

From what I have learned on this site, there are 3 brackets that hold the tank in the frame. One in the center towards the front. One at each rear corner. I believe you can also use the straps for 76 and up to hold the tank instead of the brackets. I don't have the body on my frame. So I have no way to reference the height of the tank when making brackets. I think you can buy the skid plate for 76 and up. I am going to make mine.

Steel or plastic tank? If plastic, you must use a skid plate to support the tank. What other parts do you have now?

Fairly certain the skid plate was optional in 1973. It was definitely optional in 1972. The original steel tank was not supported by the skid plate, so you could leave it off.

Do you have the '73 TSM? It has a good picture of 2 the 3 attaching brackets.

The skid plate for '76-on is available aftermarket, and it uses a strap with no brackets directly to the tank.

It is a steel tank, no other parts. This is a frame up restoration. It had a 22 gallon tank I am trying to go back to stock

How did you support the 22 gallon tank?

Assuming this a '73 style steel tank. You can approach it one of two ways. First would be to fab the supporting brackets. The picture of the fuel system shows the brackets, and the one that's missing is just the right-handed duplicate of the left one pictured.

Or, you could buy the '76 up aftermarket skid plate, and strap the tank down to the skid plate. Not how Jeep did it in '73, but it's the same tank and would probably be easier. With the first option, you can delete the skid plate, but here it's required.

The 22 gallon tank had 4 supports 2 on the front and 2 on the back that bolted to the frame
