I have been considering trying to add a gas tank to the rear of my 67 cj so I can pass at least a couple of gas stations without stoping...

these models have some brace members running to the center of the rear cross member, which looks to help support either a hitch or other implement. I was giving some thought to cutting them out and replacing them with some rear corner gussets from the frame rail to the rear crossmember.

this would allow space for an extra tank.....

I would appreciate any comments or ideas anybody may have.....

    thanks......

If you have a hitch re-brace and cut the originals out. Install later stock rear mounted fuel tank. Good Luck! Glenn

Look at an AMC Jeep ('71-75). They have the same (very similar? almost identical?) drawbar without the center braces and with the side braces. Might even bolt on.

Boyink....thanks for the link..... very cool...

After cutting out the existing bracing you were able to add some corner braces in the space, and still fit the later year tank?

    thanks again...

Aren't the diagonal braces put there to reinforce the pintle hook on the military Jeeps? Sort of a historical artifact. I'd think you could cut them and it wouldn't change the strength of the frame.

I didn't add any more bracing - between what Tim mentions and the agricultural design of the rear drawbar, I figured the braces were overkill for my use.

When I put on the new back bumper it came with some L brackets that tied in up the frame.

the brackets in the rear, aka "K" frame was to support the pto shaft. As for rear tank, get the parts for a 78+, as the earlier parts are "difficult" to get.

I gotta admit I wasn't looking forward to trying to stick some metal up in those corners, so not being one to look for work, I'll cross that idea off....

    thanks guys...
