I'm thinking about moving my tach from one of the dash bolts to the steering column. I don't want a hose clamp as they look tachy (excuse the pun) to me. I'll use one temporarily just to make sure I like it there. But if I decide to make it permanent with screws, how big it the gap between the tube and the actual steering column rod inside the outer tube? This is on a 58.

There is room for short screws, maybe 1/2" length at the most?

Here's the best way to do it and you don't need to drill into your column. Get a collar clamp from McMaster Carr the size of your column, then drill and tap into it and then clamp it around your column.

Mike, that is an awesome idea. I was not looking forward to drilling holes and forever changing it.

Find a old Sparton turn signal and rob the clamp assembly. It screws on the underside of the housing, and its original to Jeeps. Its already the correct size to clamp to the column, and you don't have to drill any holes in the outer column.
