My '57 has been modified. I have a 283 sbc, also HEI ignition, 12 volt, etc. I have the original style tank under the driver seat. A few questions:
    1) sometimes it smells of gas inside, a common thing with the tank location or perhaps a leaky gasket and do most relocate it to the rear with larger tank?
    2) Fuel sender, too much trouble with 2 replacements from various early CJ5 suppliers (not working or very inaccurate). Is there an alternative that is better with a new/different gauge (Using the one that comes with the speedo/fuel/temp combo) one that is a direct fit.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    1) I presume you have the tank with six screws that hold the sender in. You could test the new sender with your multimeter before you install it, and reject it if it does not report the level correctly. There is a resistance spec for E, Half and F in the FSM. I believe Stewart-Warner makes universal senders that have that type of mounting. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sww-385cf
    2) Any vented tank will stink of gas to some degree. Does not help that the fill is under your left elbow, and that the filer neck is so short. I have not seen one of these tanks that did not leak a little gas from the cap when gas sloshes up. If you want to convert to a rear tank, you can. The rear filler is further away and the cap is up higher, so it will stink less.

This has been covered many times in old posts.

Will that sender work with any fuel gauge? Say I bought an aftermarket one?

The resistance range on the sender has to match the gauge. You can buy a gauge that matches the sender though. I suggest you go to the Stewart-Warner site and see if they offer any different ranges for that product.

looks like the sender says 400-33.5 ohms... the fuel gauge in the cluster (From Walcks) states 400-33. Close enough?

Close enough if that's correct. Refer to your FSM.

Also, look at the spec sheet for the sender and check that it will fit. I have no experience with these parts - last time I worked on a Jeep with a tank under the seat, I got all the parts from the Jeep dealership parts counter (ca 1975).
