I took my drums and new studs to the auto machine shop. They used a hole saw type thingy to remove the swaged in studs and then pressed in my new ones. That is what i did anyway-YRMV.

I'd use the press to reinstall the studs. If your drums fit on the outside of the hub I'd open up the lug holes slightly so you can slide the drums on and off without having to remove the hub each time. Makes brake service/inspection much easier. If the drum fits on the back, then yes, you need to press them back together.
I don't like using the lug nuts to pull the studs in. I've seen them get stretched, galled, and damaged in many other ways during installation.

    :iagree:

Whatever you do, DON'T use an impact gun and an old lug nut to pull the new studs into place. That is a sure way to strip out the holes in the hub and the studs will just spin.

i used a lug nut to square up the lug when installing and used a 4 lb sledge to beat them in. after every strike make sure the nut is squared up and hand tight to the hub. this method requires you to support the hub with a long socket. you could also do this with a vise. you dont need a machine shop or 20 tons of force or special hole cutters.
