yes you are almost certainly right.
there is a piece missing off of one of the corners on that big nut.
when i google WARN locking hubs
the ads show just the cap and some rings and stuff.
is that all there is to a locking hub?

when it gets light enough i am going to open up the other hub.

Here's a link to a picture of how it all stacks up.
    http://www.film.queensu.ca/Cj3b/Tech/BrakeDrums.html

This is the socket that fits the spindle nuts; http://www.tellico4x4.com/product_info.php/products_id/3731

you can use a screwdriver and a hammer to massage the nut into loosening, but the socket sure makes it easy.

In your pic it looks like you still have a washer on the spindle, remove it, then massage the big nut loose after straightening the large washer behind it to allow the nut to turn, then remove the large washer and the other nut behind it and the hub will slip off. Might be easier to remove wheel and tire to get the drum/hub off.

    ive got the socket.
to remove that front washer what do i do?
cut a notch in it and use a BFH and a chisel or large screwdriver?

If there is a washer BEHIND that nut.
how does one get to it?
i cant even fit my finger in there.
    it is a small space

After looking at your pics again, looks like your gonna have to use a chisel and hammer to get a bite into that worn nut. The nut is trashed anyway, so use whatever means neccesary to remove it. Once that is off, your home free. Righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Oh yeah, welcome to the world of 'ol jeep maintenance. Keep a cold one handy to ease frustration.

Now, this looks vaguely like the parts I found in my Lock-o-matic Warn hubs. If so, you don't need a socket. Instead you need an allen key - see this picture

The locking ring has 3 small allen screws (hex set screws) that lock the nut to the perforated washer behind it. Looking at this picture

I see a mark that may be the recess for one of these lock screws. Clean off the mangled metal and look for 3 holes with set screws in them.

You'll get ahead of it. It's an old car, and these vehicles are often driven hard and put away wet. It's like owning a house (on a smaller scale) - it always seems like there's something that needs to be fixed or upgraded or adjusted. Jeeps are much higher maintenance vehicles than most passenger cars.

Plus, people almost never sell a car for no good reason. All this tinkering is likely why the PO got fed up with the Jeep. It'll get better.

    Bill,
Hang in there. One thing I've noticed, is once you have dealt with a problem and you fix it right, you normally don't have to deal with it again.

i just might be running out of REALLY big things that need to be done.
    new wiring, new brakes etc.
    but who knows.
i could easily run into a issue that will be another 1000 bucks or something.
i am trying to be positive about this.

    changed my mind.
i am not even going to look at it today.
i have been devoting all my time before, after work and all weekends to this.
along with every dime i had.
i am sick of dealing with it.
    time to step back.
instead i will enjoy my only day off this week.
    hmmm
maybe I'll watch some monster movies and have a leisurely brunch.:D

    BTW
when you get up at 4AM .
    7:30 is time for brunch!

I think Tim is right - that is why I wanted you to dig around and see if you can find any notches or openings.

You get the inside washer off by using hooked snap ring pliers or two small screw drivers :)

If you found one screw, and it does not turn, I expect there are more screws. It should turn with your fingers if you get all the screws out. I see at least two holes for screws.

Anyway, the notch you are pointing to is the keyway in the spindle, not the nut. You can hit it all day and it's not going to turn.

in all those other smaller holes they taper into a cone.
there is no way anything will get a bite in there.
