On the frame horns on the new Jeep I just aquired, are plates welded to the them, but they do not apear to be done as a repair, but rather for reinforcment. Do you think it would be safe to grind these off, or will such a process actually weaken the frame?
Here are a few pics. (The line in the center is just missing paint)

By the looks of those welds, you would have a time getting those off. I would just leave them on.

Those look like the remains of a home built wench mount... I have seen that sign before.

Leave them unless you are real good with a scarfing tip on a torch.

I now have 2 '68's and would like to use parts from the two of them to do a full restore on one of them. Both frames are in similar condition (other than the welded plates), but the drivetrain on this one appears to be in better shape. So hoping to take the easier route of not having to yank the drive train, I'm thinking of using this chassis, but the plates stand out like a sore thumb.

I'd rather swap drivetrains than try to remove those plates...... YMMV

I agree, just leave them. If they really bother you, bolt a plate between the frame rails; make the plate wide enough to cover the reinforcing plates. Bolting a plate across the rails there also helps add some rigidity to the frame, important for saginaw steering.
