So I've got one of the summit/mojave (honestly, can't remember which it is) in my Jeep, and obviously, ducting to the defroster is no big deal, but I'd *like* to have a floor register of some sort, as it's usually my feet that get teh cold. And having it be "selectable" from floor to defrost would be nifty, anybody got any examples of doing this, or just general advice for what to use for a floor register? I was figuring maybe I could use some sort of RV guillotine sewer valve with a cable for a selector, maybe.....

If your like most of us we have all frozen a time or two in these old Jeep tin cans while cruising around in 30 degree Weather.......As I get older keeping that heat inside has become allot more important than ever before. So I set out to get a better heater in my old Jeep full knowing that if I did not the use factor would be limited.

Pretty much a common problem with most aftermarket heaters is they will put out heat and recycled cab air but hardly ever send it to where you want it or need it most...........I bought 3 different heaters from Summit & Jegs just to take a look at them......1) The Summit 991102-1 260cfm @ 28,000 BTU,s 2) Jegs Mojave heater #400-640 12,000 BTU's 3) Summit Vintage Air #506101 W/no printed cfm or BTU's..

I purchased these through Summit & Jegs due to the easy return policy. Once I had them all here I took them apart and tried to see which one could best be modified to send either cool or heated air where I wanted it. All had a similar sized motor and squirrel cage.........all had a 3 speed fan switch and only one the Vintage Air which was also the most expensive had a Servo Heat heat valve that would electrically control the heated water via turning on or off the water.

I opted to keep the Summit #991102-1 and sent the others back...........The following photo's show the transformation of the Summit heater by building a new Plenum and adding a handmade valve controlled by cable to 1) supply air to the defrost only by shutting off the directional vents once the Plenum was pressurized or 2) shut off the defrost valve and send warm air to your lap or legs via heat registers and 3) via use of a cable operated water valve in the engine compartment that could also control the heated water to either shut it off completely or allow some to bypass which would also act as a temperature control.............I finished it up to the testing stage and have not yet installed it in my Jeep........but air flow to all areas and all mechanical aspects when finished did direct air flow where I wanted it.........took some time to build and work out but will do the job in a very small compact space!

Cut some holes in it for heat registers............two rear lowers for legs and the two in the middle to catch your body or send heat rearward.

The vent / valve for the Defrost did pose many problems mostly in room and where and I found a small window behind the dash next to the Ignition switch where the valve and duct would fit.....

That's it...............Hopefully you can get some Idea's from this.

That's pretty darn fancy =] I actually have *basically the same heater you're showing, but my vent outlets are on one of the narrow sides of the heater unit....

But it does give me some ideas, thanks for showing yours!
