all of my other jeeps have had tapered axles...my newest is a flanged axle shaft (It's a 71).
Is this some kind of conversion or upgrade done by a PO?

nope - that is oem (and a nice upgrade over tapered) and highly desired with offset differential. Only used for 70-71.

The only downside is they came with a TracLock instead of a PowrLock - when so equipped. Otherwise it's a scarce and desirable axle.

I wouldn’t call that a downside. Trac loc is better than an open differential just not as strong as a powrlock. My Dakota has had its factory trac lok for 21 years and 300k plus miles and still works good. Now if your gonna run big tires it will need rebuilt about every 3-4 years of use. The rebuild clutches are cheap. So if you have one it’s not really a downside just not as good as the stronger more adjustable powrlock that came on the earlier models.

The early Trac Lok cases were prone to breakage.
If indeed it has the original Trac Lok from 1970-1971, it'll break...guaranteed....if it hasn't already been replaced.

Not the best pic, but you can see how it has the flat plate on the end (orange part) as opposed to the small cap that covers the hub nut on a tapered axle...

Couple shots of the offset flanged 44 I installed 3 years ago.
This axle still had the original 4.88 R-P and Trac Lok indicated by the dates on each.
Don't know how I got the Jeep pic in there.......oh well.

I have a flanged that came with my 71'. At one time it had a trak loc. After breaking, rebuilding it and breaking it again I opted for a Detroit!
