Flaming River Column Instal

Here are the pics. of the instal.

From the left side. Dash brace is the origonal one that was cut and rewelded to fit the angle of the new column. The orig one was straight and larger to fit the GM column.



This is of the right side. 4 way flasher does not work as I had no one on there to begin with. Ign. switch in now below the dash.



This is the floor mount as good as I could shoot it with without taking all the mat up. It is a triangular piece with 3 bolts. It comes free from the column and is "tacked" at the correct angle at time of install. Then you tack it better after the correct angle is obtained. On a GM column, you are supposed to cut this plate free and re-tack it to the correct angle. The PO just put a piece of 1x2 wood to take up the space.



Firewall U-joint. I think it's a Borgeson needle bearing unit. A "bigun".



Box end with u-joint. Note new shaft. It's solid. The "slip" is taken up inside of the column. Jerry said about 2" of slip in there. I don't see it, but I believe him because he knew that I had no "slip" in there before and there should be for frame flex and such.



Besides working turn signals, the steering is MUCH tighter now. The old column has the orig pin type u-joints in them. Can't believe how much less slop there is now. Really tight.

I still have the orig. Cherokee steering wheel with no horn button. That will get changed soon. The horn works and the wireing is done up to the wheel. The steering wheel itself is still slightly "askew". Jerry said he had to use a "D" type shaft to match the box and they will only fit "this way" or "that way". He put it "this way" and the offset can be easily taken up when I have it aligned in the tie rod ends. I'm happy!!

If anybody want's more detailed pics., just let me know and I'll try to shoot them.

If you went with the bling bling column model, you would be obligated to get chrome spinning hub caps with neon lights.

Jerry: Funny thing has happened here about a month ago. The "Bud Light" guys have been here and put up a bunch of "Bud Light" signs that are blue in color. Well, there not only "blue", there "black light". They light up anything cotton! :twisted: Well, guess what that is!!!! We're all having a great time with them! :twisted: :twisted:

Awww yeah!, I love it.
I bought one of those too. Tilt and everything. The only difference in mine is that I am installing it though the dash rather than under it and get more of a modern steering wheel angle. I am just using one of their floor mounts and a piece of sheet metal to reinforce it through the dash.

I'll post up some pics too when I am done.

 

JeepWannabe: Watch out for the angle of your column if you put it thru the dash. May be kind of "tight" depending on how your box is mounted. The way the PO set mine up, to keep a decent angle of the u-joints, it had to be mounted below. The tilt in mine is "straight" for the driving position I use--the same as the GM column.
