i cant get to that area of the frame because someone made a new bumper and welded metal all over the place where that tag was supposed to be. i will get out the cutting torgh and gently try to remove some metal on that frame end you can see that big ugly bumper in my pics http://my1jeep.MyPicGallery.com

I saw your picture of the metal welded over top of the serial number plate. Kind've funny actually. Isn't that just the way things always seem to go! I am sure you were excited to find the body number, but I believe only sometimes can someone make a guess at approximately what jeep it went onto. The body number order is all mixed up, probably because of first made, last shipped out inventory practices. First I would get to that frame plate if you can. The frame serial numbers are in exact order.

I would recommend using a grinder or some sort of cutting wheel instead of a torch to get to the frame number. It will be plenty fast enough and won't damage anything else.

Looks a lot like my '44 MB and then there's a ton of civi gear there too. Cool ol' jeep though. Like some one said earlier in this thread go to g503 for military jeep data. And, man, that thing needs love.

Thats great news. now if you post you number on the g503.com website they will be able to give you the month and year your jeep was made, maybe even the day. They will also give you more details.
