Did you verify that the rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire when at TDC on compression stroke?

    :iagree:

I'd definitely check that before messing with the starter.

Yep, it would have to be really slow spinning over for that to be a problem, unless the starter is drawing a bunch of current and reducing the voltage drastically.

You sure of the direction the rotor turns?

first I want to say thanks for the tips and support - I'm positive I will get this, just taking a bit more of a "Learning Curve" than I had hoped.

rotor spins counter clock wise - firing order is 1342 - just followed the details of staqtic timing an F head to the letter. wires are set right, spark is good - by all accounts I should be able to turn the key and hear what I want and that is a running engine.

seams to turn slower than I would think, but consistant, not dieing out while turning. At first I thought it was just new territory to me, now I'm thinking it is turning slow.

just finished up tiling the floor and was thinking of heading over to play jeep, or I could drink beer

can't do both - jeep is at school

    different battery - no change.

staring out this for hours, I start to see things and I might be onto something.

according to the directions from the static timing link, IF I set the oil pump correctly and IF I get the distributor in properly (once the oil pump is set, it only fits 1 way), THEN, the ROTOR will be pointing at around 5 oclock and That is where #1 wire goes

EXCEPT! on the CAP, being that it is notched and only goes onto the distributor one way, the closest places to put #1 to the ROTOR position, will locate the wire at either 4 oclock or 6 oclock

    going to work on PICs

    be right back

Actual rotor "clock" position is irrelevant, as long as it points to the tower where #1 wire is located when #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke.

Also worth checking to see that the plug wires are installed in the same direction as the rotor rotation.. You wouldn't be the first guy to install them in the correct order, but in the wrong direction.

I think I have the oil pump off a couple teeth since the distributor drops into it only 1 way

    here are a couple pics

First up - rotor position is at 5 o'clock,
    [IMG]

Second up - Timing marks, engine is #1 TDC
    [IMG]

Finally, with the cap on - is it just me, or is this thing throwing it's spark when nobody is home?

It's 10:30, don't have to grout the tile floor till tomorrow afternoon, Will attempt to make this thing go Vroom Vroom in the am, but I think I am onto something

    Timing looks retarded there.

There should be an adjustment under the dist where the bracket goes.

Clock position does not match up with any tower position - it is between them - which after staring at it, it just struck me, the oil pump needs to come out and be moved a couple teeth over to move the rotor position to where it needs to be

wire locations are in order, going counter clock wise

God it would be nice to hear this come to life

I do appreciate the help folks, keep the tips coming

only adjustment I have is about 10 deg of rotation with the distributor body, not enough to line up the tower with teh rotor.

The rotor does not move unless, I remove the oil pump and turn it a couple teeth, will pull the distributor and look for the "Bracket"

There are 2 adjustments and more than 10* between them
