I don't think a HEI will fix your problem. I'm sure the guys here can help get your dauntless firing again. You don't have spark? Is that correct? Have you tried the screwdriver between the plug wire and spark plug to see if you're getting spark through the plug wires?

Nope that won't necessarily solve your problem.
Did you try changing the ballast resistor on the firewall. Big white ceramic block about 3/4"x3/4"x3" long with a wire going in and a wire coming out. If this burns in 2 nothing will fire the system.
    Generic picture.

You say you have 12 v at the + and -sides of the coil. Do you know how to adjust the points? Are they correctly adjusted ?

It reduces the voltage when running and uses the full 12volts for starting, should be around 9v I think.

Check to ensure distributor rotor is turning

Check any wires off the negative post of coil for a grounded condition - disconnect tach if have one.

Have you checked the hot wire running to the points to make sure it's not grounded?

Is this a Delco distributor (aluminum) or Prestolite (cast iron)?

Ok please take no offense to this, I'm simply asking for info. You do really know how to set points? In otherwards this is not the 1st set you've messed with. We get a lot of young guys on here who have never seen them or set them since they have basically been obsolete for 30+ years now and assume its to easy. Are you setting them with the distributor in the right place, in otherwords while the point follower is on a flat and not a lobe.

Do you have a dwell meter? If so hook it up and have someone crank the engine over and look at what it says. It should read about 30* if set right.

I don't know any way to check the condenser, but you say you replaced it, check that it is grounded, if the coil is good and the points are opening and closing you should get spark.

In the years of doing tuneups on points type distributors, I have the points on the highest point of the lobe. If the points are set on a flat, when does the points have the opportunity to open and close?
