As long as the angle of the t-case output is pointing down at the same angle the pinion is pointing up, the u-joints won't know the difference if they are compensating for a misalignment up/down or side/side.

If the misalignment is in both (up/down and side/side) directions but on the same horizontal and vertical planes, the u-joints will simply be at a diagonal misalignment, rather than just up/down if the pinion was directly behind the t-case output. It just rotated the plane of misalignment ~45°.

As long as the operating angle is not too large, yes. Mine the yokes actually grind against each other when my suspension flexes any.

Anyone here running the AA intermediate shaft in a Dana 18? Does it make any substantial noise difference? I put lots of highway miles on, towing a camper and such, and that's my reason for wanting to do this swap. I rebuilt my Dana 18 with all new bearings and a Novak intermediate shaft kit. The fluid is clean and clear. I'd love to keep it, if only it could be quieter.

I'm running it on my dana 20 but it's almost the same part.

    Would recommend it, less noisy.

I've heard mixed results on the intermediate shaft upgrade ...............but having said that , no one has really any Idea of what conditions or environment the results or feedback was coming from?

I think the subject of drive train noise has to be a multi-step process especially in a Tin-Can like a Jeep.......Motor & tranny mounts , Isolating things from metal to metal contact , Tire & alignment noise be it front or rear, driveshaft angles, worn bearings in "Any" part of the drive train can send harmonics up and down the chassis...............Even Straight cut gears in the tranny & TC............

I would perhaps try that tapered bearing upgrade........plus everything else mentioned above including the use of some sound deadening products to the floor area around the Transmission & TC below the drivers compartment while sealing up any openings.....Plenty of products at Jegs or Summit that work.........even the sticks coming out of the floor can be insulated with copper tubing foam insulation..............and If your not already using synthetic oils in the gear boxes, I would at least explore that avenue......or talk with some of these suppliers engineers.

I think I am going to do the tapered bearing AA intermediate and synthetics before putting in the Dana 20. I have no insulation at all so I think that needs to be addressed as well. Even if it is still too noisy, I can always use the Dana 18 in my son's CJ5. I appreciate everyone's input.

My son CJ and I drained the SM465 and the Dana 18. Both had very clean gear oil come out with no shiny paste or pieces. We refilled the trans with straight 40 and the xcase with Lucas 85-140 and Lucas oil additive. We wheeled all day and the trans shifts very easy now, it was a bit stiff before, and the transfer case is considerably quieter, even on road at speeds up to 75 mph. We will pull the trans and xcase after deer season for a thorough going thru of the trans and an AA intermediate shaft kit for the xcase. We also insulated under the shift boot and by transfer case sticks which helped a bit. Will dynamat the underside of trans tunnel when we pull it all out. I think we are on the right track.

After a few months of using the trans with SAE40 motor oil and no leaks, and the xcase with new Lucas 85-140 and Lucas additive, I am now happy with the noise level inside the CJ-6. I have an Advance Adapters intermediate shaft kit coming and have confirmed prices with McRuff on the machine work. The trans shifts so well and is so quiet now I am not rebuilding it as previously planned. I will still be dynamatting the trans tunnel anyhow and I think that will be good for my noise control. There is also going to be another trailer built this winter for the Jeep. Kind of a mix of a Bantam, a Sears/David Bradley/Eastern European farm wagon design (my grandparents were Polish). Stay tuned for not very exciting pics.

I have bought none of the above items, just put up pics of the three things I am going to use aspects of to build a small trailer. My last attempt at a small trailer for the Jeep ended in a 5.5'x12' utility trailer that can carry a Ford 8N and weighs a lot.

I made some windshield frame light brackets so I could leave lights on while facing forward working on things. LEDs are now from the back on to the windshield. The back now has its own LEDs to light up things behind me.

My littlest guy (Big Zeke) was a bit excited to help with the light brackets.
