This is in our '53 A1. The noise seems to be coming from inside the timing cover. I don't have a tach so I can't tell you rpms, but it starts when I accelerate the engine and quits when it returns to idle. It's not the rhythmic noise that I've heard from bad rod bearings. Intermittent clattering are the best words I have to describe it.

I took off the fan belt, noise still there, so it's not the water pump or alternator.

I did a search in this forum and found a post from this past January with a similar issue. Turned out to be a bad timing gear.

What do you think? Timing gear? Or . . .?

Maybe you could use a doctor stethoscope to better find the place, I have a F 134 too, it can be inside or outside so difficult to say.

Probably vibrations at a X rpm and something else is not enough tighted?

A skinny piece of wood works just as well. Just press it against the engine and your ear on the other end and it will transmit the sound.

It kind of sounds like one or more of the values need adjusting.

Randy (1955 CJ-5) was down at Joe's Machine Shop in Boise checking on the rebuild of his L134 from his '51 CJ-3A. He mentioned this noise to Joe, who asked for a video. He listened to it and said it might be loose or broken timing gears and maybe other bad stuff too. So the radiator is out and as soon as the gaskets I ordered get here I'll open up the engine and see what I find.

Thanks to Randy and Joe for helping out on this!

I'd been waiting until we got home to check on this noise, since I wasn't sure what I might find. I took off the timing cover this afternoon and this is what I found.

Joe at Joe's Machine was right. The timing gear bolt had come loose. The timing cover kept it from backing out all the way. The cover has a wear spot on the inside from the bolt head.

Here's the old bolt next to the new one that will replace it. The threads in the cam are fine and the timing gear is still tight on the cam.

The Jeep gods smiled on me today. :)
