Does anyone make a "shelf" performance camshaft for the f head, or are the reground on your cam? Just thinking out loud.

Nothing off the Shelf persay but you can have one ground. I have heard rumor that a L head shaft makes a difference. Jim knows more about this .

I heard the L head cam makes it run good, but you will break rocker arms. I don't know if this is caused by spring bind, incorrect rocker arm geometry, retainer hitting valve guide, or just too much rate of acceleration on the lobe. I would like to know more about this!

funny thing is, that F4 would run 50 miles or so before breaking the arm.
it never did it in the drags, just putting around, whenever it decided it wanted to.
When we finally figured out why, we were amazed it ran as strong as it did.
We never persued the L4 cam, just got the right F4 cam and no more problems.
Look into an L4 cam, maybe you can do something with it, got to be a bunch of those collecting rust/dust in blocks somewhere.
I might even have that L4 cam that we used, but I'd have to look for it.

That's interesting, I never thought about it but would have figured that both engines used the same camshaft.

we ordered a new cam for an F4.
the L4 cam was inside, boxed wrong.
when you lay them out side by side, you really can't tell anything different.
apparently, the lift for the intakes is different, I don't recall the specifics now.

Keep the stock cam, I went thru the same search a couples years ago and had the same results. For more power in my old trusty F4 I found that the best upgrades are in the ignition system, Intake and Exhaust. Thuis is what I did.
    1. Rebuild the distributor (New Shaft bearings, Gear, springs, cap and rotor)
    2. MSD-6 Off road Multispark system
    3. 8mm silicon wires (Custom made form an Accel 8cyl kit)
    4. Accel Supercoil (Big, bulky Yellow coil)
    5. Spak Plugs Gapped at .060"
    6. Weber 32-36 Carb
    7. Clifford Performance Header, custom made 2" exhaust piping and FlowMaster Silencer.

It may take a few coins out of your pocket but believe me the F4 comes alive with this mods. I do really miss riding my Jeep it's currentlly in the last process of a frame off restoration (over 5 Years) but it looks like I will have it ready for summer.

    Welcome!
Your setup sounds great! Where did you find the dist bushings, springs, gear? And, when I lookup the carb, the listing is a 2 bbl, is that right?

Yes the weber is a 2bbl, one is 32mm and the other is 36mm, it is a progressive 2 bbl that works like a 4 bbl.
You can get an electronic unit for the F-head now.

Exactly, the weber carb is a DGV32-36 2BBL carb. For the distributor bushing I machined them because I was unable to locate off the shelve replacements.

This is all great info. What did you do with the intake opening to get the Weber on there? What initial and total timing was used. How quick does tour advance come in, and lastly are you using a distributor with vac. advance or mechanical only. Sorry for all the questions, but it sounds like I am following you around with performance mods!R)

Oh! So, progressive, meaning it works with the stock manifold and just hits the secondary when needed (?) Electronic, meaning O2 sensor/processer controlled (?)

Sorry, I meant an electronic distributor not electronic carb.

oh but there is a big differece:beer: look at how the intake lobe comes to a sharper point,as opposed to the f- head intake lobe it is more rounded

So for, what I estimate as, $1000-$1500 do you feel that you're getting ~25% more performance/power?

The reason I ask is that my F4 is running perfectly as far as I'm concerned, no points/distrib probs, no carb probs ... plugs are texbook-tan whether idling in lo range or at highway speed. BUT, I could use >20% more power but won't do a swap and would prefer not to sell and search for a V6.
