The first engine numbers I posted was on the front of the water pump boss (53326) I have found other numbers on top of the water pump boss which I believe are the correct numbers, BF6385CAL. I’m thinking the ending letters stand for:

    C = 0.002" undersized piston pin
A = 0.010" undersized main and connecting rod bearings
Not sure what the B,F,L, represents.

This clouds the issue a bit more for me as the numbers on top of the water pump boss have only 4 numbers which doesn’t jive with the Jeep vin. Even the numbers on the front boss (53326) are 43304 over the Jeep vin (10022).

My 50 pickup has 4J3584, my 51 pickup has no number anywhere on the water pump boss.

OK, the number on the F134 out of my '56 is 4J122356. This is on the flat area above the water pump, and right below the thermostat housing, facing up. And this means???

For the engine numbers I have researched so far it falls mid to early year 56, no surprise.

Edit: How far off is your vin to engine number?

The engine ID doesn't seem to be coming any clearer with more information. :(

I'm very happy that Chuck bought the 3B and is giving it a good home. I wanted it to go to someone that would appreciate it more than just a hunting truck :)

Chuck...my VIN is 5754836141. I don't know how the motor number and the VIN are supposed to relate to each other, but it looks like I probably still have the original engine, huh? This is good.

Yes, I would say you have the real thing there Rondog.

    5754836141 =

First two digits 57 represent the Universal Jeep line
Third digit represents the body type 5 = CJ 5
Fourth number represents the engine type 4 = F-134
Fifth number represents the drive 8 = All 4WD

The last 6 numbers are your S.N. On earlier models it’s the last 5.

There can be a wide range between your vin and engine number. Earlier production vin and engine numbers were close within signal digits later as wide as 4 digits. Some of the variation between vin and engine numbers can be a attribute to over seas sells amoung other factors.

Andy, thanks for working with me to get this deal done, I’m liking this 3B in a big way!

Rondog, of the 18915 CJ 5's built in 56 yours was the 9134th Jeep that rolled off the line.

Thanks Chuck! Right in the middle of the road, just where I like to be. Let's see, probably made around June or so, middle of the year, not a stressful time of year, let's hope the workers were contented and did a good job on my Jeep! Looks pretty good so far.

After 1950 the pickup prefixes were changed to 1P or 1T plus serial number.

There are two possibilities concerning the two engine numbers located on the water pump boss.

    1) The top number (BF6385CAL) could possibly represent a rebuilt engine. Being that most all F-134 engine numbers are stamped on top of the water pump boss the machinist would have to grind off the original number, stamp the rebuild code then re-stamp the preexisting engine number (53326) on the front. Possible, but seems like a lot of work.

    2) The top number (BF6385CAL) along with the front number (53326) may have been stamped at the factory, with the top number indicating a purchase order or for engine warranty purposes.

Until I find more evidence I believe this engine to be original. Any help with decoding the top number would be appreciated.
