Engine Miss

Within the last month or so, an engine miss has "appeared" with the 225. It's an intermittent miss that happens across the rpm range. Almost like the engine shuts off and then springs right back to life. It's can get pretty bad at time; seems a little more often in the mornings. The dwell meter says the points are in good condition and the dwell is right on along with the timing. The fuel filters look fine too. Any suggestions? Coil maybe?

 

Probably not the coil, those tend to get worse as they warm up. I'd start by giving it a good tune up. Change the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, and condenser (even though the meter says they're good). You might be surprised how much of a difference it can make.

 

If you still have it check the ballast resistor. I developed a slight miss which lead to a big miss (the Jeep wouldn't go) when the resistor went bad, a few other guys I know have had the same problem, I carry an extra one now.

 

I had a miss developing at highway speeds and replaced the fuel filter and it has been fine since.

Have you checked the bronze filter at the carb inlet?

 

Bob & Joe: Take that bronze filter OUT of the carb. and throw it as far as you can into an "approiate" receptical. Put a good inline filter in and "forgetta aboutit".

 

mine does that on the right side, till it warms up. then goes away. left doesn't miss at all......

 

Yeah the bronze filter in the carb is clean. Heck, the points aren't that old, but I have an extra set to try. You know, I replaced the ballast resistor this past winter and haven't drove it too much with it. I hope I still have the old one to try. That might be it. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll let you know what I find.

 

I had a miss that took forever to find. It was a wrongly gaped plug. too little-.25. regaped goodbye too problem

 

Looks like it's the ballast resistor. I bypassed it to check and the engine didn't miss a beat. I'll have to pick one up Monday. Thanks again guys for the help.
